What Parents Need to Know
This review of The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3-D was written by Common Sense Media Editors
Parents need to know that the line between fantasy and reality is often blurred here, so kids under 7 may be confused about what's imaginary and what isn't. There's some potty and gross-out humor involving 3-D vomiting and passing gas, and some mild action violence that's very cartoonish. One of the young characters was separated from his father. Another character appears to die, but turns out to be fine. Some of the creepy creatures (such as the Plug Hounds and the sharks) may frighten younger kids. Max is bullied by his classmates. Sensitive kids may be upset when Max's parents argue and appear to be on the brink of divorce.
Families Can Talk About
- Families can talk about the fact that this movie was based on the dreams and fantasies of the director's 7-year-old son -- which of your dreams is worthy of a movie? They could also talk about the importance of imagination and turning dreams into reality. Some kids may be inspired to start keep their own dream journal, just like Max.

What’s the Story?
Shy 10-year-old Max (Cayden Boyd) loses himself in an elaborate fantasy world to escape the classmates who bully him and the constant bickering of his parents (David Arquette and Kristin Davis). Max's fourth grade teacher, Mr. Electricidad (George Lopez) encourages Max to keep recording his dreams, but Max makes the mistake of sharing the adventures of Sharkboy (Taylor Lautner) and Lavagirl (Taylor Dooley) with his class -- and of course no one believes that Max is friends with a boy who was raised by sharks and a girl with supernatural powers who emits red-hot rocks. But then Sharkboy and Lavagirl show up at school one stormy day and plead with Max to come with them to the three-dimensional Planet Drool -- Max's imagination and dreams are the only thing that can save their planet. Max heads to a paradise filled with roller coasters, cool gadgets like a fudge-spewing motorbike, and the delicious Land of Milk and Cookies to help his friends defeat the nefarious Mr. Electric and keep his dreams alive.
Is It Any Good?
THE ADVENTURES OF SHARKBOY AND LAVAGIRL IN 3-D may not be Oscar-worthy, but it will definitely please its target audience of elementary-school kids. The novelty of using 3-D glasses alone will make it irresistible; many of today's children have never had the opportunity to see action literally jump out of the screen at them, and they'll be amazed by the eye-pooping experience. They'll also get a kick out of the story, which was "based on the intergalactic journeys and superhero stories created by director Robert Rodriguez (Spy Kids)'s 7-year-old son Racer Max."
The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3-D borrows heavily from The Wizard of Oz -- from the tornado that sets the action into motion to the appearance of familiar faces in the alternate world (Max's teacher, the class bully, and the object of Max's affection all have important roles in Planet Drool), many parts of the movie feel a little too familiar. But there are enough cool special effects and gadgets to captivate kids, and enough clever references to amuse parents (the kids take The Train Of Thought, float through The Stream of Consciousness, and experience a Brain Storm -- with brains raining from above due to an excess of creativity). The message about following your dreams becomes heavy-handed at times, but kids will be too busy taking in the 3-D images and losing themselves in a vibrant fantasy playground to notice.

The worst movie ever to be made it 3D! The only failure... sad.. :( lol
Ha ha i was laughing throughout this whole movie! And not because it was funny.. It was so terrible and dumb. "Let's go to the land of milk and cookies!" I mean, What the heck! You should probably see it to laugh at the bad plot, terrible acting, horrible script, worst special effects ever, corny violence, and again, bad acting.

Gives daydreamers a huge pat on the back.
I happen to have a daydreamer and this is a movie that just re-enforced that it is good to daydream. Don't get me wrong, there is a time and a place for daydreaming but real life is not very tolerant of daydreamers. Especially real life schools.

Not for preschoolers
My 5 year old loved it and wants to see it over and over. My 3 year old was terrified and traumatized by the 3-D villian.

liked it at first, now i dont like it...
When I saw it, I LOVED it but, when I bought it and saw it the 3rd time, I suddenly changed my mind, it was cheesy and meant for little 5 year olds that beleive in everything they see. The word "dream" got on my nerves for days after I saw it the 3rd or 4th time. Its just so stupid, now. I used to be a freak when I saw it the 1st couple times and now I know better that it is just so darn stupid, even with George Lopez. =(

Adults will likely be gagging, kids will likely be gleeful...
what can i say - after suffering through Super Babies 2, I NEVER thought I'd be put through another celluloid Inquisition so badly in 2005. Well, Sharkboy placed me on Dante's 7th ring of hell for about 90 long minutes. But - I wasn't there for me. My 4 1/2 year old son LOVED it. There's nothing to be gleaned from it however - other than the trite-old "to dream is good" and "an active imagination is a sign of intelligence". Oh, and I should throw in "don't keep a journal"! The special effects are cool to kids, but mind-numbing for adults. I just bought the DVD - and my kid has watched it non-stop for the past week. Soooo, if entertainment for Junior is what yer after - this is a home-run. For adults, I would say this is one that you "suffer through because you really really love your kids".

Save your money!
I saw this today with my five year old daughter and 12 year old son (dragged him). Frankly, the movie was too dark and scary at times for the five year old, but moronic for anyone older than that. My daughter (who doesn't scare easily) held my arm numerous times and screamed out when the mother is pulled away by a tornado type storm. My son actually commented about how it was even worse than he could have thought possible. The best line was at the end when a child in the audience asked loudly "is it over now?". Save your money - this movie is an insult to children's inteligence and unbearable for the adults that take them.

Painful for me but my kids liked it
I consider sitting through this movie a huge act of love for my children. The kids enjoyed the film and would see it again. I was praying for the movie to be over and I think I said, "make it stop" out loud.

don't see this movie
shark boy and lava girl was worse than the yu-gi-oh movie. It was so cornball, boring, unimaginative, unnecessarily frightening, and the 3-D effects fell flat. With the incredible graphics of PS2 and Nintendo 3-D movies pale in comparison. I would rather stay at home watching my son play Ratchet & Clank than pay $16 plus popcorn to suffer through this movie.
