What Parents Need to Know

This review of Alice in Wonderland was written by Nell Minow

Parents need to know that Alice does just about everything we tell kids not to do, including going off with strangers and eating and drinking things that may be dangerous. During the psychedelic 1960s, the scene with the caterpillar puffing on a hookah was popularly considered to be a reference to opium or hashish -- possibly because the movie, like the book, has such a surreal and dream-like quality -- but there's nothing in the movie (or the book) to suggest that connection.

Families Can Talk About

Talk to your kids about the media in their life. We have more tools and tips that can help
  • Families can talk about the dreamy world Alice finds herself in. Which of these wild characters is your favorite? Why do they celebrate un-birthdays in Wonderland? Could you celebrate one right now? Why does Alice sing the song "I Give Myself Very Good Advice (But I Very Seldom Follow It)"? When did you give yourself good advice and not follow it?

More on Alice in Wonderland

What’s the Story?

The children's classic by Lewis Carroll about the girl who falls down a rabbit hole is presented by Disney in this lively and tuneful version. Alice is reading with her sister when she sees a white rabbit, fully dressed, muttering about being late. She follows him down a rabbit hole to Wonderland, where she grows bigger and smaller, meets the Cheshire Cat, attends a mad tea party, talks to a caterpillar who puffs on a hookah, and triumphs over the Queen of Hearts, before finding that it was all a dream.

Is It Any Good?

Like another perennial favorite, The Wizard of Oz, this is the story of a girl who thinks she wants to go somewhere exciting, but, once she gets there, spends the entire time trying to find her way home. Wonderland may be different and exciting, but its inhabitants are often rude and unfriendly, even hostile.

It's worth noting that Alice does just about everything we tell kids not to do, including going off with strangers and eating and drinking things that may be dangerous. She acknowledges her mistakes in a song that kids will relate to: "I Give Myself Very Good Advice (But I Very Seldom Follow It)." Kids may enjoy silly characters like the Mad Hatter and March Hare (especially the celebration of "unbirthdays"), and the tantrums of the despotic Queen of Hearts, who constantly screams "Off with their heads!"

A good introduction to Lewis Carroll's classic. Boasts some of the Disney canon's most surreal and twisted images.

    Great for Young Children

As a relatively conservative parent when it comes to what I will allow my children to watch, I give this one two thumbs up. Although I could have done without the smoking, name calling, and head bonks, overall, it's pretty harmless, and thoroughly entertaining. What I liked most is that the entire movie occurs inside of a dream, which is a good way to address with young children, these are all behaviors/things we don't do in real life. You can control a lot of what happens in real life, you cannot control what happens in your dreams. For my family, this movie has led to several great discussions on why smoking is harmful, how name calling is hurtful, and what kind of things we each dream about. The music is also wonderfully charming, and I enjoy how Alice is self sufficient in the movie....although she goes with strangers, and eats foods she probably shouldn't...at least she is not dependent on a man to achieve happiness!

It Scared Me When I Was Little

I saw this when I was little and I loved it. I haven't seen it for a while but it is a Disney classic that anyone should be aloud to watch. The scene where she is in the woods and there is the story about these two guys creeped me out and the ending was a bit scary but suitable for ages 5-1/2 because I thought it might be scary for little kids

    Trippy book and movie.

I love both, but they send you into some kind of surreal world; a dream that you won't be done with until it's done with you. It's a great quality, although most likely intentional, that not everybody finds every day. Alice In Wonderland is a nice escape away from what reality is. Oh, and 'I Give Myself Good Advice' is a song that fits me wonderfully, haha.

Not good for the little ones

Some things in this movie are too intense for the under 5 crowd. My 4 year old was disturbed by the Queen of Hearts and wondered why Alice was so scared. We watched it once and took it back to the video store.

Fantastic movie! THIS is old Disney!

Fantastic. I loved it. The songs, the whole story....amazing. That said, I bet you're all wondering if there's anything really bad. Not really. A caterpillar smokes through a gian pipe. Obvious that he's in a bad mood, no doubt cause he smokes. (Jk) Some funny threats of "Off with their heads!" from the Queen of Hearts, but the only thing slightly disturbing about the whole thing is how flippant she is with the punishment.

    Scary but Solid

I, personally, didn't like this movie. It was clean, and it's a classic, but I nevertheless was creeped out by Tweedledee and Tweedledum (sp?) and also by the little oysters that got eaten. For some this might be a really good movie, but many of my friends share my opinion that it was creepy and somewhat dark (the cat and the queen). I'm not going to let my kids watch it until they're at least 8 or 9. If your kids have grown up with this sort of movie, however, it should be fine.

    Super creative

I love this movie - it is pure fun. Super creative, super imaginitive, and fun to watch. Be aware, that near the end, when the Queen of Hearts appears, be prepared for yelling/screaming by the queen (which bothered my kids, as well as her shouting constantly "Off with their heads!") Aside from that, the whole movie is definitely fun and vibrant and silly. Good fun!
