What Parents Need to Know

This review of Back to the Future Part III was written by M. Faust

Parents need to know that this final entry in the trilogy is better for kids than the sexier Part I and Part II. Absent are the more mature themes of its predecessors, though kids may need to have adults explain some of the plot complications.

What’s the Story?

Beginning where Back to the Future Part II left off, Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) gets a telegram from Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd) revealing that he has been stranded in 1885. Marty discovers that Doc will soon be murdered by a dastardly villain, and sets out to save him. In the past, Marty meets his Irish immigrant ancestors (played by Fox himself, and Lea Thompson), and murderous bandit "Mad Dog," who is perennial nemesis Biff's kin. When the time vehicle runs out of fuel, he and Doc must find a fuel alternative before Mad Dog kills Doc. Doc falls victim to destiny when he saves schoolteacher Clara Clayton (Mary Steenburgen).

Is It Any Good?

At first glance, Back to the Future Part IIIlooks like it won't be as good as its predecessors -- surely a conclusion set entirely in the Old West would be dull compared to the flashier and sexier one and two. But even kids who would never otherwise watch a Western will be transfixed by this thrilling adventure.

Although you don't have to have seen the earlier films, you'll enjoy Part III more if you have -- this one is peppered with references to the first two films. Anyone who recalls the clip from a Clint Eastwood movie shown in part two will guess how Marty (who takes the name "Clint Eastwood" here) will survive the big shootout. And look for the members of ZZ Top as musicians at a square dance. Details like that are what makes it fun to keep the whole series on hand to watch over again.

This is the best and most appropriate of the Back to the Future trilogy. Although BTTF is okay for younger kids, their comprehension of the film may be a problem. But, if you're looking for an interesting movie that you can watch with kids here's one.

    Great Movie!

The Back to the Future movies are my favorite movies of all time. They are better as a set, but you can watch just one, too. This one has a small amount of violence, but it is not graphic at all.

    Great second squel!

I like back to the future more than part 1! It's another great family movie. It has more acton than part one. I don't like Biff. When he is a teen his hair is short but when he is older he looks like and old man!! But watch this second squel!

    Fun Wrap-Up to Amazing Trilogy!

BACK TO THE FUTURE blew me away. BACK TO THE FUTURE PART 2 was a worthy sequel. PART 3 tops 2, but one's still the best. Anyhow, PART 3 is a fun ending to one of the best trilogies ever. PART 3 picks up right where 2 left off. The 1955 Doc Brown gets Marty to the Old West where he assumes the identity Clint Eastwood and searches for Doc. But Doc's infatuated with schoolteacher Clara Clayton, and he wonders if he wants to go back to 1985. 3 is the most kid friendly of the triolgy, th only one worth a PG rating. No sex at all, unlike the first two. Language is milder too, down to the occasional "d**n" or "b**ch". Violence is what you'd expect from a Western, none of it nasty. BACK TO THE FUTURE PART 3 sums up the triolgy well and will for sure leave audiences satisfied, yet sad that the old Delorean will never flash again. Highly reccommended.
