Strong new Bond in a darker re-imagining.

Why We Rated This iffy for Ages 13–15

What to watch out for

  • Messages:

Villains are ruthlessly efficient and lethal in pursuit of money and power; Bond is also brutal, darkly pleased to best his opponents.
  • Violence:

Lots of stunts, per usual in Bond movies: animated opening credits sequence features shooting, stabbing, and falling, with bright red splotches for blood; film includes explosions by bombs, grenades, and missiles; car chases and flips; leaps on and off building scaffolding; corpse wrapped in a hammock; Bond's face and body are cut and bleeding repeatedly; bloody results from frequent shooting, knifing, and punching; poisoned, Bond sweats and gasps, nearly dying; a long, sad drowning sequence; fight scenes feature kicking, punching, falling/throwing bodies down stairs; one villain wields a sword; Bond is tortured by a villain whomping his genitals with a knotted rope.
  • Sex:

Bond beds two different women (all three characters show nude legs and arms while kissing and embracing passionately on beds and floors); Bond is naked for a torture session (you see everything but full frontal); joke about an undercover name for Vesper ("Miss Stephanie Broadchest").
  • Language:

Mild language, including "Jesus Christ," repeated use of "hell" by M (i.e., "What the hell is Bond doing!?"), and "ass."
  • Consumerism:

The usual upscale Bond paraphernalia: Liquor tie-ins include Heineken and Smirnoff Vodka, goodies include Aston Martin, Jaguar, Sony Vaio, Sony Ericsson, Omega watch, Bodyworld Museum exhibit; Virgin Atlantic airline (including airport cameo by owner Richard Branson); Coca-Cola.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

Much drinking (champagne, martinis, brandy, Scotch) and oh yes, those liquor sponsored placements...)

What Parents Need to Know

About Casino Royale (2006)

Parents need to know that teens are absolutely going to want to see this much-hyped re-start to the James Bond franchise. The new 007, however, is darker than previous incarnations. His sly, barely perceptible smile suggests that he relishes revenge and takes pleasure in his violence. The film is full of violence, including spectacular explosions, intense physical fights, shooting, knifing, cars crashing, and drowning. Dead bodies show blood and vacant-eyed faces. A torture scene (featuring a naked Bond) shows him in obvious pain as his genitals are smashed with a large, knotted rope. One main character meets a sad demise. Sex scenes show Bond with two different women, in various states of undress. Lots of martini-drinking as Bond discovers his drink of choice (thanks to liquor sponsors Heineken and Smirnoff). The language is pretty mild.

Mature teens, I saw it with dad and am mature 11 yr. old!

I am a die-hard Bond Fan along with my dad, and we LOVED this movie! This is my favorite Bond so far, even better then Quantam. There are violent, disturbing scenes as with all Bond movies, and a very riveting scene. Action-packed and exciting this is a very good movie for mature bond-fans.

Excellent, Violent Prequel to the Bond Series.

This is a great film. It's exciting, well-acted, and keeps an interesting story with a nice twist. Although it is very, very violent; there is even a torture scene (quite gritty and disturbing). Daniel Craig may even be the best Bond yet! Try it; it's fantastic!

    Not a good bond movie

In terms of content, Casino Royale is a very mild PG-13 movie. Some moderate violence is shown, except for a very intense torture scene involving a club being whipped upon Bond's bare genitals (not visible, rather implied). As for a movie review, it quite frankly, is not a very good bond movie. Bond should be about gadgets, action, and sex, but this movie shows a darker side of Bond. Torture never existed in previous bond movies

    Greatest Bond Movie Ever

Daniel Craig is probably the greatest bond ever after seeing this movie. It is bond reborn. It's a great movie about love and action. I saw this the night it came out in theaters. It's better on a big screen to get the feel of all the action. I recommend this for anyone above 9. It's quite possibly the greatest bond movie ever.

A great prequel to the Bond franchise

This movie is a great prquel/reboot to the Bond franchise. It's also one of the most violent Bond films since "License to Kill". I think nthat the nude torture scene where the villian whacks bond with a rope was not needed. It was the first time that they had Bond naked for torture, and also the most violent torture they've done so far. Another issue is that messes up his trademark "Sharken not Stirred" line in one scene where the bartender asks him "Shaken or Stirred?" and Bond says "Does it Look like I give a D*mn" The action sequences were great, and it was neat to see how Bond got his start. I also liked the cliffhanger ending which leads into "Quantum of Solace". Not for kids under 13. This movie is too violent and sexual for them. Iffy for 13, and great for 14 and up.

Umm, great but NOT FOR KIDS!

I loved this. But I have to say in wasn't good for me AT ALL. Sexual Situations: Sexual kissing on floor and bed between different woman; nude slapping with a hard rope that makes James go to hospital after injuries of the slapping, making out, too. Violence: If you could rate stars out of violence, I'd rate them all! Bombs, pistols, stabbing, cutting off an arm (not shown, but yes, you get the idea). SO MUCH DEATH! (you see the death scenes). Etc. Language: M just HAS to say a cuss word over the tiniest things! (h*ll, a**, MAYBE a da**). Message: Terrible message for young ones! Lots of drinks served and drugs that are against the law. (I think you got the idea from what's shown above).

Bond's Back at his Best, but Think before taking the Kids

Since Ian Fleming created Bond, he has gone through many incarnations. Sean Connery had perfected Bond in his first movies, being able to switch between ruthless and a charmer. Roger Moore was a very good Bond but wasn't able to stand to the juggernaut of Connery. Pierce Bronsman had the same problem. But today, I have to say, this new Bond is easily better then the past ones and can stand up with Connery. He is ruthless, charming, and even a bit humorous. The movie starts off in one of the most memorable opening sequence of any Bond film. Shot in black and white, it shows Bond becoming a 007. While the stories plot can be a little difficult to follow as a whole, it is an enjoyable experience. It is the best Bond I've seen since Goldfinger. As for age, not only do I think that this should not be seen by children because of the content, but I also think that the younger one's should see the older Bond movies first. If they are interested, of course. There are scenes of great emotional destress and even torture. This is not a children's movie. But for the people who have seen other action movies like, say, "Hot Fuzz" this should be appropriate. In conclusion, don't take children, but if you want to see James Bond at the top again, see this film.

    Too much!

When did torture become acceptable entertainment for young teens? I was shocked by the torture scene when Bond's testicles were repeated beat with a knotted rope- especially since so many of my peers had seen this movie and thought it okay for their middle school kids. I didn't think I was a prude parent, but I would just assume my kids didn't see such human cruelty till they were a bit older.

    Awesome

This film is absolutely amazing. This is my favourite Bond movie out of all of them, and it far better than its sequel Quantum Of Solace. However, this film is darker and more violent than the early Bond films, and most parents will find that this film is different to the Bond's they watched when they were growing up, and I do not recommend it for children under 11, but those this age and above will enjoy an amazing movie.

    Bond Thrills... Yet Again

Another great movie put together by the people behind 007-James Bond, I like how its more Connery-esque in the matter that Bond fires his gun all of 20 times in the film and the is more Hand-To-Hand Combat.
