What Parents Need to Know

This review of Finding Nemo was written by Nell Minow

Parents need to know that even though there are no traditional bad guys in this movie, there are still some very scary moments, including creatures with zillions of sharp teeth, an apparent death of a major character, and many tense scenes with characters in peril. At the beginning of the movie, Marlin's wife and all but one of their eggs are eaten by a predator. There is a little potty humor. The issue of Nemo's stunted fin is handled exceptionally well -- matter-of-factly but frankly.

  • Families can talk about how parents have to balance their wish to protect their children from being hurt (physically or emotionally) with the need to let them grow up and learn how to take care of themselves. They could talk about Nemo's disability and about everyone has different abilities that make some things easier for each of us to do than for most people and some things harder. How do you know what your abilities are, and what do you do to make the most of them?

More on Finding Nemo

What’s the Story?

Marlin (Albert Brooks) is a fond but nervous and overprotective clown fish. A predator ate his wife and all but one of their eggs. When it's time for Marlin's surviving son, Nemo (Alexander Gould), to start school, the little guy is excited but Marlin is terrified. Nemo has an underdeveloped fin. Marlin has done a good job of making Nemo feel confident and unselfconscious. But Marlin is overprotective, which makes Nemo anxious to prove he can take care of himself. On his first day of school, Nemo swims too far and is captured by a deep-sea-diving dentist who collects fish for his aquarium. On a journey that will introduce him to extraordinary characters and teach him a great deal about the world and even more about himself, Marlin must go literally to the end of the ocean to find his son and bring him home. On the way he meets Dory (Ellen DeGeneres), a cheerful blue tang who has a problem with short-term memory loss. They search for Nemo together, in the face of stinging jellyfish, exploding mines, and creatures with many, many, teeth. Meanwhile, Nemo has made some very good friends in the dentist's aquarium, including a tough tiger fish (Willem Dafoe) who helps him plan an escape.

Is It Any Good?

Pixar Studios may have the most advanced animation technology in the world, but they never forget that what matters in a movie is story, characters, imagination, and heart. FINDING NEMO has it all. This epic journey filled with adventure and discovery encompasses the grandest sweep of ocean vastness and the smallest longing of the heart. The movie is a visual feast. The play of light on the water is breathtaking. While preserving the characters' essential "fishy-ness," Pixar and the talented people providing the voices have also made them each wonderfully expressive, and it seems only fair to say that they create performances as full and varied as have ever been on screen. There are some scary moments in this movie, including the off-screen death of Marlin's wife and future children. It's handled very discreetly, but still might be upsetting to some viewers. There are terrifying-looking creatures, but one of the movie's best jokes is that even the sharks are so friendly that in an AA-style program, they keep reminding one another that "fish are friends, not food." There really are no bad guys in this movie -- the danger comes from a child's thoughtlessness and from natural perils. There are no angry, jealous, greedy, or murderous villains as in most traditional Disney animated films. Another strength of the movie is the way it handles Nemo's disability. But best of all is the way it addresses questions that are at the heart of the parent-child relationship, giving everyone in the audience something to relate to and learn from.

Good movie - sort of like it.

So so movie. Ignore Merlin's (Merlin is Nemo's dad) language because it is not very good.

    AMAZING

awesome! i loved it when i first watched. pixar is brilliant family fun (and most of their movies have made it to the top 250) negatives are Nemo telling his father he hates him and runs off, disobeying him (which irons out in the end and nemo learns his lesson), some scariness caused by sharks and other sea creatures,.and some mild peril. but still awesome. if you have kids under 4 or 5 you may want to watch it first. if they are 6 or older you probably have nothing to worry about. definitely worth a watch.

Very young kids may be scared, though...

This movie may be Pixar's best, but it could be scary for toddlers and very young preschoolers.

a good fishy tale for younger viewers.

    A Fishy Review

This movie is a fun tale for kids and parents to see. I think that there are some scary fish like the shark and the angler fish. But its not scary for kids. There is some minor viloence but not enough to scare a kid. This movi is educational in alot of ways like have confedence and listen to your parents. There are some good role models like Gile and Dory. There is some death but it isn't shone in the movie. And there is some suggested death. This is a great movie for ages 6-10.

Kid Friendly with lots of Family Fun

Nemo is taken by divers. Marlin(father) is after him. This movie was tons of fun for the whole family. Although this movie was made for child entertainment, it was very educational. The EAC(East Australian Current) and the age of a sea turtle are scientificaly correct. With lots of role models, I prefer Gill. He is determined. You may not notice this at first, dut he is very unselfish. It protrays friendship and to never give up. But... this movie does have pros AND cons. There are a couple of scary parts like the baracuda scene, the sharks, and the angler fish. But, the shark scene does turn out funny. There is a bit of violence in this movie. The baracuda scene, shark scene, and even the jellyfish scene. There is a loss of life in this movie, the mother, Coral. Although they did cover it up very well. I do not think any parts are questionable, but two scenes are a bit innapropriate. The scene where all the kids call the boat "butt" and the scene where the tank is filthy. A character starts a sentence like this,"We are swimming in our own" but gets cut off. All in all, it was a amazing movie!!!

    Great Family Movie

The Movie Finding Nemo is a great family movie, but I would recommend it for ages 6 and up.There are some scary characters in this movie such as Darla,Bruce, the baracuda, and the angler fish. Some of the violence includes when the baracuda kills Nemo's mom and siblings. Also,Bruce smells blood from Dory's nose and attacks her.Another scene, the angler fish tries to kill Marlin. There are some inappropriate language for instance when Nemo and his friends are at the Drop Off and the octopus said,"That's a pretty big butt."Next when the seahorse said,"Hey, look at me I'm going to touch the butt!"Also when the blowfish in the tank said,"Were swimming in our own...." I think the movie is educational in a way because it talks about the EAC(East Australian Current)dude! This movie has a possitive message saying that it's ok to be different. The main two role modles are Dory because she has a possitive attitude during the "Quest"to find Nemo.Gill is also a good example because he was determined to get Nemo back to his dad,and he was not selfish.Finding Nemo is a Great Family Movie for almost everyone!

    An Outstanding Movie for Kids

Finding Nemo is an outstanding movie for kids. There are a few scary things like Bruce, a shark, a Barracuda, who ate Corale and the babies, and Darla, a girl thats 7. I think the appropriate age is 6 and up. There is some violencce in the movie. Bruce tried to kill Dory ,and Darla killed a fish she got for her birthday. Thre is some bad language for younger kids. One of the fish in the ocean thought a boat was a butt. Also, a fish in the tank said,"We're living in are own," then the starfish said,"Shhhhh." There are a lot of educational things in Finding Nemo. They use the Austrailin-current and how old a turtle was. There are a lot more educational things. Finding Nemo has a point all along the movie. It's saying "Never give up and keep trying." There are four role models. Gill, who can be stuborn but wise, try's to help, not himself, but Nemo out of the tank into the ocean. Then he even risks his life to save Nemo's. Dory, who has short term memory loss, helps Marlin all through there adventure. She helps him do the right thing to. Dory is always thimking wich really helps. Niegal, a pelacan, finds out about Nemo and brings Marlin and Dory to him. Marlin , Nemo's dad, always tries and never gave up to find his son. Marlin at first was over protected till the end. I think this movie diserves four stars. There is a little bit of bad things but overall it's outstanding.

    Depending on your freinds

In nemo there is a positive message to learn,"you can always depend on your friends."Before watching nemo make sure kids 4 and under do not wathc this because there is some violence that might scare younger children like dory getting smacked in the face with the goggles and Bruce the shark smells the blood and chases them.In the movie there is some inapropriate language like when they say its a butt reffering to the boat. It's also educational because the whole movie is about nemo swimming away which sends off a message,"let your kids explore." There also is some good role models like Marlin and Dory because they never give up or maybe even bruce the shark because he try's not to eat fish[fish are friends not food]

    A Cute Movie

Findining Nemo is about a clownfish named Marlin. Marlin had a wife named Coral an her and Marlin had thousands of babies. Marlin and Coral kept the babies in a little room where they can rest. Marlin and Coral started to talk about what they were going to name the babies then, came a barracuda and just stood there and then chased after Coral. Coral went in the babies room andwas trying to save them. Mr. Barracuda ate Coral and the babies ,except babie lived his name was Nemo. Five Years Later.... Good morning dad, Nemo said. Guess What? DAD I'm going to go to shool, school, school but,Marlin didn't want Nemo to go to school but, he was captured by two men and they took Nemo to a dentist and put him in a fish tank. Marlin kept looking for Nemo then, he got lost and met a girl named Dori and Dori was helping Marlin find a white boat. Marlin and Dori found Nemo and they live happily ever after.

    a family movie

finding Nemo is a great movie. In the begining a barracuda comes and took Coral and almost ate all of the eggs exept one. So that might be scary. Nemo has one big fin and one small fin. they call the small fin the lucky fin.Nemo goes to school on a stingray with lots of other fish. They went to the dropoff. Nemo got taken by a diver. While his father was chasing him he bumpedinto a other fish. He asked her if she saw a boat pass. Her name was Dory. She said that she saw a boat pass. While they were swimming they stopped and saw a sharks teeth behind them and that might be scary. They saw raser sharpteeth that was frightening. Nemo got put in a plastic bag and a girl was shaking it like crazy. Nemo got flushed down the tiolet. The part with the crabs is funny. Then marlen found Nemo and it was a happy ending.

    There is always Someone Help

I think this movie is for ages 6+ because there are some scary images. In the beginning there is a Baracuda that kills Choral(Marlins wife) and knocks Marlin out. Theres a shark that comes, that is pretty scary, but nice until he goes in to his frenzy mode after smelling the blood. The mine field is scary too because there is alot of exploding in your face. I see the positive message is, Even complete strangers will help you till the end. An educational part is about the EAC East Australian Current. Or maybe even all the different kind of fish. I think Crush is a good role model because he let Marlin a complete stranger tag along with them.
