Why We Rated This on for Ages 13 and Up

The good stuff

  • Messages:

Shows the challenges of caring for and training a high-maintenance pet and how it can bring out the worst in some people, but also how difficult situations can bring families together.

What to watch out for

  • Role models:

Sebastian is a womanizer, and he uses props to entice women whenever he can -- including using Marley as babe bait and even pushing a stroller over to a comely woman for attention. Marley can bring out less-than-honorable behavior in people. His misbehavior prompts John to call him "the worst dog in the world" and causes Jenny to demand that he be taken from the house and put in a shelter.
  • Violence:

Marley's out-of-control behavior isn't violent, per se, but he wreaks havoc wherever he goes. A neighbor has been attacked in one scene -- viewers don't see the violence, but she suffers a knife wound, implying the violence that befell her.
  • Sex:

Though no sexual activity is explicitly shown, it's implied, especially in a creaky bed at an Irish inn. Content relating to reproduction (getting pregnant, miscarriage, birth control) might be too mature for younger viewers. Some shots of women in bikinis on the beach; a supporting character has lots of lecherous maneuverings. Jenny swims seductively in the nude, enticing John to collect his "birthday present." Marley humps the dog trainer's leg.
  • Language:

Predictable for a dog-centric movie: "crap" and "poop." Other language includes "ass," "damn," and "goddamn."
  • Consumerism:

Jenny and John pursue the American dream: a nice house in a good neighborhood, a nice car, a big trip, etc. But the pursuit is also a struggle, and viewers see how John and Jenny sacrifice to gain the material pleasure that they eventually achieve. Specific products/brands shown/mentioned include Volvo, the Philadelphia Enquirer and the New York Times.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

John mentions having taken bong hits in his youth. John and Sebastian usually bond over a beer. Parties involve drinking wine or champagne.

What Parents Need to Know

This review of Marley & Me was written by Joly Herman

Parents need to know that although the lighter side of this family-targeted dramedy has been played up in the marketing campaign, it does tackle themes like loss and mourning. While Marley's rambunctious antics will certainly amuse kids, there's some emotionally challenging material here. On the up side, there's not a lot of other problematic content; language is mild ("ass" and "damn") and sexuality is more implied than shown, though the characters do discuss topics like getting pregnant, and there's one nude swimming scene (but nothing much is on display).

More on Marley & Me

What’s the Story?

Newlywed journalists John (Owen Wilson) and Jenny Grogan (Jennifer Aniston) leave Michigan winters behind in favor of Florida's sunnier climes, where they find themselves struggling to gain footing. When Jenny starts talking about a family, John asks his bachelor friend Sebastian (Eric Dane) for advice on how to distract her. Sebastian suggests a puppy -- and so Marley comes tumbling into their lives. As the rambunctious dog destroys their house, their car, and their social interactions, John decides to use his antics as fodder for his new newspaper column. His editor (Alan Arkin) loves the stuff, and John becomes a fixture in the South Florida journalism scene. Meanwhile, Jenny announces that she's pregnant, and their family drama unfolds in its tragicomic glory.

Is It Any Good?

Based on John Grogan's book of the same name, MARLEY AND ME successfully portrays what it's like when an abnormally exuberant family member takes center stage -- because, make no mistake, Marley is a full-fledged member of the Grogan family. Though he tests every limit possible -- chewing through the last threads of their patience and human dignity -- Marley teaches the Grogans about loyalty and undying love.

Audiences might be surprised at the emotional power that the film packs -- especially because it's being marketed as a family comedy -- but the effect is gratifying and real. And though Wilson and Aniston take a little while to hit their stride as a couple, overall the movie is a pretty seamless depiction of the arc of family life.

A little far with the sexual content

It's a cute movie, with some profanity, but what is really a concern it the sexual content. There are scenes of women in bikinis, and one guy uses marley and John's baby as babe magnets. Also, Marley does some perverted things to his dog sitter. While she is taking a shower, he partially pulls down the shower curtian, and while you do not really see her nude body, you can still sorta see her outlines through the shower curtian. Also, as she has a towel on, Marley tugs on it until it falls off, again not show. Overall, it was a nice movie.

    Perfect(:

Marley & Me Marley & Me is a great movie because it shows what life is really like. It also shows how an animal is not only a pet but a friend and also apart of your family once you get them pets are like your children they have feelings and emotions just as we do. It also shows that some times the spoiled ones are the sweetest just like jam. Marley & Me also has good morals to it, and has real life problems in the movie. The first time I saw Marley & Me was when it came out in theaters my boyfriend and I went and watched it, and I absolutely feel in love with it. The movie is really good for any age groups, but I would say best for ages 10+ because they could really understand the movie and what the meaning of the movie is. I would defiantly give Marley & Me a five star rating.

    great and sad comedy

most of the movie is fujnny but the end is extremly sad. And some of the sexual content is just well.... it should have been put in a PG-13 movie. But overall pritty good.

A movie filled with laughter, puppies, and tears!

First of all, I think it should've been rated PG-13, but 12 and mature 11 year olds can handle it. There is a scene when two people get into a pool naked, and there's two sex scenes. There even is some violence when there is a break in next door a girl gets stabbed and you see her wound and her pain. There is some language such as a**, d**m, g*d**m,b***h, and some others. There is more sexual content then violence and language though. Think twice about taking your 9 year old, but older tweens and teens will love this hillarious, cute, but sad story! I reccomend seeing Marley and Me and watching it over and over and over again!

Perfect for teens who love a funny, tear-jerker!

Marley and Me is an great story...older kids will find it funny and tear-jerking! There is some language, such as: B--ch,A-s, and other swear words. There is more sexual content than violence in this movie. A girl is stabbed and you can see her wound. The sexual content in here is innapproprite for kids under 11 or 12 if they are immature. Marley also humps the dog trainers leg, which your kids might find funny or you might think it is totally innapproprite. Think twice about taking your tweens to see this movie because there is a lot of sex implied and talked about.

Great movie, but I wouldn't see it again.

Marley and Me is a great movie, but I wouldn't see it again. I saw it two years ago with my dad, his girlfriend and her teenage daughter. The parts they showed in the commercials were funny, but the ending was incredibly sad. Marley died... Why did they have to show that?! I heard everyone in the theater crying, including my dad. I m sure every animal lover would be. It was kind of traumatic how his stomach twisted and had to be put to sleep. Also, some of the parts could be hard for a little kid to understand, like when Jenny has a miscarriage. There was also some mild language. I also got a bit freaked when the girl got stabbed in the stomach in her own driveway and had to go to the hospital. Jenny and John also make out a lot and I think did "it". Other than that, there was a good moral: Even a terrible misbehaving dog can still be a loyal, lovable friend who you'll miss once there gone. PS: Go on now, hug your furry best friend and play a game of fetch with his favorite toy. You know you love him! (or her)

    Preteens and older

This was a great film! I saw it when I was eleven, and I didn't think much of the sexual content. Now that I think about it, there was a lot. It was also sad. My sister was eight, and She had to leave the room because she was so sad. I got creeped out when the girl said she was attacked with a knife. Preteens and older should see it.

PG rating is misleading. Good movie but not for younger kids. Too much sex talk!

I was not happy that our local theatre played this during the summer family fun festival and many young kids were there. I would definitely have not taken my 9 yr old daughter if I knew that there were seeral implied sex scenes, especially one where the bed was squeaking and she calles her husband saying there is a naked lady here waiting for you. I felt bad that daycares and summer camp groups had taken 5 and 6 yr olds to the movie that day too. I am sure they would have chose not go go either if they knew about the sex material. Not cool, Marcus Cinema. Also, movie ratings should have made it PG-13 rating for sure.

    Marley and Me is Great!

There is some sexual activity and off-screen sex is implied. The main character, John Grogan's best friend is a womanizer. There is some language but, over all it's a great movie.

    Better As An Adult Movie

This is a very sweet, touching, and humorous story. I recommend this to older teens due to the adult main characters and their mannerisms. There are some sex scenes and some nudity. Overall a great story, but might be something worth waiting for, adults will enjoy this more than teens.

I really love this movie, but don't see it with really little kids because it has sexy stuff, like REALLY sexy stuff... and really bad language. Also, it is soo sad when marley died

I watch the movie and it was the best movie ever even better than the book. It was just hilarious all the trouble that Marley caused. When I saw that Marley was getting the sleeping needle I broke into tears. I had three dogs and so far two of them past away and I have a 2 and a half year old one but anyways I think I cried just as much for Marley than I did for my other dogs. Anyways other than the End best Movie ever.(P.S. There is some brief nudity so I thik maybe you should only take 13 and older to that movie).

Extremely emotional film best suited to older teens and adults

This movie is not at all for the younger set. It is a movie about real life and, although there's nothing wrong with that, most younger kids don't need to be exposed to those things quite yet. There are hard lessons in this movie....coming to grips with a life that didn't turn out the way you wanted it to, the difficulties in raising children, and the emotional aspects of living with a pet who becomes a member of your family. There were a lot of positive things here.....a husband and wife who truly seem to be in a loving relationship where they both do things to help make the other one happy, showing the realities of being frustrated with a pet and yet still loving and caring for it as part of the family, and children who really seem to get along as siblings. The sexual aspects of the film are not explicit, and they could open a conversation with older children about where babies come from, etc., but it is not something that children younger than 8 or 9 need to even have an inkling of, I think. Overall, this is not a "for the whole family" type of movie. If anything, it is a movie that is best enjoyed by adults, although there would be little worry for teenagers watching it. It is, however, very highly emotional and could really upset more sensitive children and youths.
