Why We Rated This on for Ages 5 and Up

The good stuff

  • Educational value:

In addition to positive lessons about teamwork and friendship, kids will learn a bit about Chinese culture (albeit a Disneyfied version).
  • Messages:

Although Mulan disobeys her father, she does it to help and protect him. She also deceives her friends, but also for reasons that she thinks are right at the time. Ultimately, the movie's messages are about the importance of working hard and working together, being honest, and trying your hardest.
  • Role models:

Mulan is a brave, resourceful female role model. While pretending to be a man she displays crude and stereotypical male traits, but it's bravado and is played for humor. Some of the male characters have old-fashioned ideas about what females are capable of, but they learn the error of their assumptions in the end.

What to watch out for

  • Violence & scariness:

Mulan joins the Chinese army during wartime. She learns to fight with weapons. The Huns destroy Chinese villages and kill people (not shown). Some of the battle scenes are scary and intense.
  • Sexy stuff:

    Some flirting.
  • Language:

    Not an issue.
  • Consumerism:

    Not an issue.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

One character smokes a long cigarette.

What Parents Need to Know

This review of Mulan was written by Betsy Wallace

Parents need to know that kids under 5 may find some of the scenes in this lush Disney adventure frightening. Mulan becomes a hero and helps her people -- but she does so by rebelling against authority. She also learns to fight with weapons. The Huns destroy Chinese villages and kill people (not shown), and some battle scenes are scary and intense.

More on Mulan

What’s the Story?

Based on the story of China's legendary girl warrior Mulan, this animated Disney film begins as the Huns invade China and the army calls up its best soldiers. Mulan's father is on the list, but she can see that he's too weak from an old injury to fight. So instead of staying home to find a husband, Mulan (voiced by Ming-Na) dresses like a man and heads off to war, taking her father's place. Her ancestors try to send a powerful dragon to help her, but a scrawny dragon named Mushu (Eddie Murphy) sneaks off with her instead. Mulan struggles at first but becomes a brave and skilled fighter against the Huns -- and finds new friends in unexpected places.

Is It Any Good?

Disney took a gamble on Mulan -- she doesn't fit the princess mold, and most moviegoers had never heard of her. And the end results are a bit mixed -- the songs and supporting characters aren't particularly memorable, but the settings are gorgeous, and Mulan herself is one of a kind in the Disney canon (it's too bad that in the end she still needs to be married off to a "Prince Charming" who saves the day).

Still, many aspects of Chinese culture are incorporated -- such as reverence to one's ancestors, the significance of dragons, and the importance of honor. The DVD includes a feature that shows how the filmmakers researched not only the Mulan legend but also Chinese art, architecture, history, and culture. There's also a feature for kids that explains the film's many cultural references, as well as deleted scenes and songs.

    You go, Mulan!

As a Chinese-American, I found this movie to be a positive one for our culture and my two girls. They LOVE this movie and watch it at least once a week. It is a typical, Disney movie where the plot involves problem/solution and of course there is an ugly bad guy. But in the end, the heroine prevails. Mulan teaches children that it is okay to follow your heart even if it means going against the grain. She also shows how girls/women can be strong and brave also and that they can be smart and inventive too!

    Classic

This might be Disney's best girl movie. The dragon, voiced by Eddie Murphy, is FUNNY! Reccomended.

I've loved this movie since I was two years old (it came out in 1998 I believe, and I was born in 1996). Mulan is one of Disney's only heroines, also my first rolemodel as a kid! She still is my rolemodel now. This movie has amazing music, great animation, an interesting plotline that might inspire older viewers to do research on Ancient China and the supposed 'real' Mulan that inspired the poem, which inspired the movie. It has its share of funny moments, too, especially earlier on in the battle scene with the three soldiers. Speaking of which, there are some darker moments in this film, like when Shan Yu gets pinned to a bunch of fireworks (it's implied that he... ehh... explodes), and when Shang finds out of the death of his father. It could get scary for some young viewers, although it was never frightened me. This movie's been out almost eleven years, and I'd be surprised if you haven't managed to see it yet, but if you haven't you should immediately buy it.

    Wonderful Classic

I'm fifteen and still love this movie! Disney classics are the best movies out there, I don't care how good digital and 3D gets. Mulan has a little violence, but ABSOLUTELY NOTHING graphic, sexual, or profanity. I recommend this for ages 7+. Very good.

    A wonderful movie

I found this movie to be just wonderful. My son, whom was 4 at the time he watched this, was just enthralled and loved to watch this movie over and over. I beleive this movie provides a great message; that anyone, whether male or female, can do anything that they put their mind to. As with most animated Disney movies, the animation was just beautiful. This movie also takes a child into a different culture, giving them a little idea of life other than the "American Way". If you are a DVD collector of Disney films, I would highly recommend adding this one to your collection,

    Mulan

Mulan is probably the best Disney movie ever made. It's great to take a break from the damzel-in-distress princess movies where the prince always comes in at the end to save the day. With an exciting plot line, great characters, and unforgettable songs, Mulan is a great choice for kids of any age!

    YAY!

I like this movie!! Little bit of violence, no language, good social image (hey there are so many bad role models for girls now, Mulan is one of the only good ones). I really like how Mulan proves herself to be as good as the boys. It's cool :)

One of the best Disney movies

This was my favourite Disney movie when I was little, and still is. I think it does a fantastic job telling the story, while keeping within the boundaries for the young ones. I remember finding the action in the movie, though moderate, very exciting and enthralling from when I was younger. Fantastic movie for all ages.
