What Parents Need to Know

This review of The Others was written by Nell Minow

Parents need to know that this movie doesn't have any bad language or gory images, but it's genuinely creepy and may be upsetting even for older children. Some will be concerned over Anne's questioning of her mother's religious principles or disturbed by the implications of the final explanation.

More on The Others

What’s the Story?

THE OTHERS centers around Grace (Nicole Kidman) and her two children, who live in a huge old home on an isolated British island. World War II has ended, but she still hasn't heard from her husband and is trying not to let herself fear that he may be dead. Her two children have a genetic photo-sensitivity and break out in welts if they are exposed to any light stronger than a candle. The servants all left mysteriously, so they are there alone when three new servants show up, explaining that they worked at the house once years before and were happy there, so they have returned. Their arrival is unsettling, but not as unsettling as evidence of "intruders," including sightings by Grace's daughter Anne. Grace does her best to hold everything together, to protect the children's souls (she is deeply religious). She also has an elaborate system of keys to make sure that all doors are locked and all curtains drawn, to keep out light, as she says, the way a ship is designed to keep out water.

Is It Any Good?

Way back before computer graphics, moviemakers knew how to scare us through what the movie didn't show us. They knew that no one knows what scares us as well as we do ourselves, and that anything we could imagine would be far scarier than anything they could put on the screen. The Others is a return to that kind of old-fashioned-squeaky door hinge-flapping shutter -- "Who is that playing Chopin downstairs when I know I locked the piano?" -- "She can't leave now! It's too foggy!" sort of thriller, the kind that creeps into your bones and makes you shiver.

This movie is more mood than plot, but the mood is expertly handled by the writer/director and by Kidman, who makes her attempts to maintain control scarier than outright terror. The cast is outstanding and the ultimate resolution properly eerie.

    Intense at moments

This movie is very intense at parts but not flat out scary. The language is not at all but there is a minor scene of sexuality between a married couple which is just kissing followed by an image of their backs naked in bed (nothing explicit)

Not very scary...a good movie for kids who insist on watching a horror flick

For people who have seen movies such as the Amityville Horror or The Ring, this movie is a sleeper! It has some moments of creepiness, but that alone is not enough to carry a two hour film. It is a good film for people who are just getting into the horror genre to see. There is virtually no language, violence, blood, gore, ect. It is fine for older kids and teenagers.

    This is crap!!!!

The movie is ok it's not great. It's billed as a horror movie but there is not one scary part in the entire movie. The end is bad enough by itself but adding to that it totally copied the sixth sense which is a much better movie than the others by the way. I rented the others on vacation and when i told my mom the ending she looked annoyed i had no idea why. The next night i watched the sixth sense in the end the same gosh darn thing happened as in the others except the sixth sense was made first. I'm almost surprised the others wasn't sued!! They stole the idea and made it suck.

    A Great First Horror Movie!

This wan my first real scary movie I watched. No violence, but one pretty creepy image. This is phycologicaly scary not blood and gory. There is suspense and creepy music. The twist is guessable but only when you try and listen to clues and think very hard. I guessed it vaguely about forty five minutes in, but my mom hinted around with me. Great if a kid wants to watch something scary without having nightmeres.

    Very Interesting!

I thought this movie was a very good one. It may be innapropiate for kids at a younger age, due to the re-enactments of suicide and the murder of a womans two children. Otherwise there is only intense situations including scariness, which will have you on the edge of your seat. I do not feel it is something for parents of tweens/teens need to worry about.

    It was cool

I thought that it was a fair movie a little on the edge of your seat but not very gory or bloody but you should at least be 11 to see it.

One of the Best Ghost Movies of All Time

The Others is a fascinating and creepy thriller that is one of the best supernatural thrillers I have ever seen. Nicole Kidman and the two children give great performances, and the direction was very eerie. As for content, The Others has literally no violence, language, or drugs, but is too creepy for most kids. Overall it is more creepy/eerie than actually 'scary', but there is one genuinely freaky scene that alone is probably too much for kids. Good for kids 12+

    Very scary

An EXTREMELY good scary movie. If your kids want to see a scary movie, show them this one. There is virtually no language and little violence. But in spite of that, this will scare them. Nicole Kidman did fantastic, and this remains one of my favourite scary movies of all time.
