What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this DVD incorporates a previously aired TV cartoon, Winnie the Pooh: Boo to You Too (1996), into its story. Although the DVD has a Halloween theme, the scares are relatively mild -- a few of the worst frights include bats, crows, and a wheelbarrow full of jack-o'-lanterns that seem to come alive.

Positive messages: Overcoming fears; sticking by your friends; learning to compromise.
Positive role models: Characters work together to overcome fears and parents will love that the characters, at one point, use veggies and fruits for trick-or-treat goodies instead of candy!
Violence & scariness: Roo and Lumpy are easily frightened, especially of something they call the tree of terror, but they learn that it's just their imaginations running wild.
Sexy stuff: Not applicable.
Language: Not applicable.
Consumerism: Not applicable.
Drinking, drugs, & smoking: Not applicable.

What to talk about

Talk to your kids
  • Families can talk about how the friends work together. How does Piglet get "un-scared" of Halloween? How do his pals help him? How do Lumpy and Roo learn to conquer their own fears?

  • How are the personalities of each character different? What does Tigger mean when he sings "If only Piglet was more like me and less like him"? Do you ever feel like that about friends?

  • Why is it important that we're all different, and how do those differences make us special?

What's the story?

What's the story?

After Pooh (voiced by Jim Cummings) gobbles all the trick-or-treat candy (and immediately feels remorseful, on top of having one monstrous tummy ache), Lumpy (Kyle Stanger) and best friend Roo (Jimmy Bennett) embark on a brave quest to find the dreaded Gobloon. Whoever traps him gets to make a wish, and the friends plan to wish for more sweets. But since this is Lumpy's first Halloween, he's pretty scared. To comfort him, Roo tells Lumpy the story of how Piglet (John Fiedler) overcame his own fear of Halloween. When the pair locate the Tree of Terror where the Gobloon is said to make his lair, they rig a trap, setting off a chain of events that leaves them separated and scared but still determined to save each other from harm. Throughout, the characters work together in many ways and even compromise for each other.

Is it any good?

Is it any good?

Winnie the Pooh and the other lovable characters of the Hundred Acre Wood celebrate Halloween in POOH'S HEFFALUMP HALLOWEEN MOVIE, a delightful, sugar-coated spookfest. October 31 is the perfect night to overcome fears, especially for Piglet and now Lumpy, the timid young heffalump (an elephant-like creature) introduced in a Pooh's Heffalump Movie.

The DVD also features fun songs in which the costumed characters dance and sing "Who's Behind That Mask You're Wearing?" and "We Can Weather Whatever Comes Along." Bonus features include games such as "Trick or Re-Treat" and "Pooh's Boo! Bingo."

Not just a safe Winnie the Pooh!!!
I'm not sure CS Media even watched this one. 2/3 of the movie is just plain scary stuff. It had my 4 year old freaked out. I'm not sure if she had nightmares from it, but she was asking about the scary tree for a while. This is SOOO far from the innocence I expect from Winnie the Pooh. The movie is very dark. And the resolution is about 2 minutes; not nearly enough to make up for all the dark and scary stuff in the rest of the movie. Watch it with your kids, and be careful.

Don't show it to kids under 3
Although it scared my daughter in some parts and I had to turn it off, when she gets a little bit older she will love it.

great movie for preschoolers
this movie is a perfect movie to watch with your preschoolers but not your 2 year old or 1 year old because there are some scenes that might scare them.

The little guy loves anything Pooh and this was right up his street. He was a little concerned when Piglet loses Lumpy and thinks he has turned into a pumpkin but it wasn't too much and he thought it was great.. Quote from the little guy "it's very good" he marked it 5 for "The Best" !

Great, but only if your kids don't scare easily
Adorable movie about friendship and Halloween, but be warned that there are some very intense scenes for little ones (i.e. The Tree or Terror). My three year old was fine and loved the movie, but it scared my five year old so much I had to turn it off and she ended up having nightmares from the movie.

Scarier than you'd think
I bought this movie when my oldest was 4, but his 2 year old brothers were too young to watch. He was a huge Pooh fan, but not this movie! The Tree of Terrors and some of the scenes with the characters' shadows freaked him out. He had nightmares. When my twins were old enough to watch, one reacted the same way, but the other loved it! Now they are too old for it, so I gave it to a friend, who said her 4 year old is also prone to nightmares and probably isn't ready to watch it yet.
