More on Dignity

What’s the Story?

On DIGNITY, Hilary Duff has the same electronically processed, baby-doll voice, and the same penchant for self-absorbed lyrics as we heard on her past efforts. Still, the former child star has transformed from well-scrubbed, wholesome girl-next-door blonde to sultry, glamour-puss brunette. Some of the lyrics are clever; for example, when she uses a line attributed to Andy Warhol: "You'd show up at the opening of an envelope." Other lyrics address dealing with disappointing boyfriends and other tough life events with self-confidence and humor, delivering a subtle girl-power "you-can-do-it" message to young fans.

Is It Any Good?

Dignity is a sparkling, energetic album that will appeal to dance-club wannabes of all ages. Hilary doesn't exactly break new ground, as most of the songs seem to be about herself. But she does apply some ironic wit here and there. "It's not news when you've got a new bag/it's not news when you're looking your best/Come on, give it a rest." Instrumental tracks are tasteful and appropriate, featuring some especially terrific rhythm section and guitar work. So put on your dancing shoes, sing along loudly, and join the party.

    Some good messages, fun beats

The beats are so much fun! And some of the lyrics are good messages. "Dignity" tells people not to pretend to be someone they're not. "With Love" promotes communication in relationships. "Between You and Me" says that it's okay to refuse people you don't want to date, and "Happy" says not to let a rotten ex get you down. A fun album for 11 and up!

More edgy than previous albums...but still nice

A lot more edgy than the previous albums (Hilary Duff, Metamorphosis, Most Wanted, etc.) but still good messages for kids.
