What Parents Need to Know

This review of Re-Up was written by Kathi Kamen Goldmark

Parents need to know that Eminem uses shock value to get his message across: four-letter words, explicit sexuality, and gunshot sound effects are all part of the deal. But this visceral, in-your-face rapper is still one of the best around. Unfortunately, this album highlights other artists on Eminem's label who have yet to live up to his artistic standards.

Families Can Talk About

  • Families can talk about Eminem's rhythmic phrasing and expressive delivery. Do you think his message would be as effective if he toned down the shocking word play? What makes his songwriting so unusual?

More on Re-Up

What’s the Story?

Designed to help launch several new Shady artists -- Stat Quo, Ca$his, and Bobby Creekwater -- RE-UP originated as a street mixtape project, destined only for underground distribution; or so says the press release. The end result, however, is a product every bit as slick as any other Eminem release without the talented treatment of language that he's so capable of. The album opens with a blast of shotgun fire and then rolls into a deluxe assortment of four-letter words (punctuated by more gun shots). Many tracks are performed by the featured artists, with or without Eminem. For the most part, the Shady boss lifts the others up, coaxing good performances out of his crew. But much of the writing isn't up to usual Eminem standards.

Is It Any Good?

Ths album is filled with tedious boasting about sexual and automotive prowess -- without the pointed poignancy and clever lyricism we've come to expect from this artist. What's not missing from this album is Eminem's usual pissed-off, potty-mouth persona. Employing his trademark throaty growl and uniquely rhythmic phrasing, he attacks every track with the intensity of a pit bull. Parents are likely to be uncomfortable with the graphic and exploitive sexual content on several of the songs. And, there's the obligatory (yawn) cell-phone call, the drug and gang references, and the "N" word used over and over again.

eminem's family of rappers returns with some suprises

this time eminem is back but with his family of rapper 50 cent, stat quo, bobby creekwater, cashis, miser porter, bizzare, obi trice, and d12. all these artists are good and tallented except for one cashis. whose songs seem lie torture but for every song that features him there is a catchy brilliant song right behind it wheather it be wer'e back or murder. then there are the remixes which are kinda good except for bobby creekwater's smack that which is better than the original song. then there are the 5o cent and eminem songs jimmy crack corn, you don't know, and the re up. then the shinig sars of the album eminem's two solo songs publicenemy number 1 and no appologies. which are short lived but brilliant songs. download wer'e back.

    a little weak

the re-up is an average rap album with average rappers trying to get publicity by having eminem featured in all the music so there just using him so guys like cashis and loyd banks can get popular but, eminem is so far ahead of them lyrically he needs to stop producing and work on getting his new album in stores....there is one good track on this album called ''you dont know'' with eminem and 50 cent but the rest is just average rap

    crap

everyone who owns this album or wants it needs to go buy some jazz. thats where all music since the 60s (and before) has originated from. its much better than all this bull* rap. just go buy jazz. cuz rap is worthless. parents make your kids listen to jazz. not rap, which is derogatory to everything in existence. oh and it makes you look retarded. everyone who listens to it! BUY THE DAMN JAZZ!!!!!!
