Why We Rated This on for Ages 12 and Up

What to watch out for

  • Messages:

Some songs feature empowering, you-go-girl messages, but gender roles in all the songs are very traditional. In reference to her wedding-ring finger she sings, "If you like it you should have put a ring on it."
  • Violence:

    Not an issue.
  • Sex:

Some teasy flirtation, but nothing really explicit.
  • Language:

    Not an issue.
  • Consumerism:

    Not an issue.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

A few beers here and there: "I have a six-pack in the cooler."

What Parents Need to Know

This review of I Am...Sasha Fierce was written by Kathi Kamen Goldmark

Parents need to know that Beyonce Knowles's third studio album includes strong doses of gender stereotyping and longing for her guy to call, but there's also a lively, feisty, "girls, we got to stick together" message on some tracks.

Families Can Talk About

Talk to your kids about the media in their life. We have more tools and tips that can help
  • Families can talk about "If I Were a Boy," in which Beyonce assumes that men and women always behave differently in relationships. Do you think the song promotes gender stereotypes? Given Beyonce's true-life fame and influence would she really need to be more like a boy to enjoy life more?

More on I Am...Sasha Fierce

What’s the Story?

On I AM…SASHA FIERCE Beyonce applies her considerable talents to songs that are mostly about relationships. She sings about the glow of early love, the disappointments of love gone bad, and how much easier life would be if she were a boy. She co-wrote and co-produced every track.

Is It Any Good?

With Beyonces's usual exquisite delivery and excellent production standards, I Am...Sasha Fierce sparkles with intensity while setting the star squarely in some very traditional roles. "If I Were a Boy" is a fantasy about all the things women could do if they had the same freedom as guys. It's the "if" that raises questions. Why can't women take more control over their lives and relationships?

Some songs wallow in co-dependency: "If I begged and if I cried…would it give me some light/should I wait for you to call?" But others are lovely descriptions of heart-stopping moments that promote a positive message of supporting a friend: "She was lost in so many ways/out in the darkness with no guide/ I know the cost of a losing hand."

Even though there are awesome beats and good messages she cusses way more (s**t, b*tch, d*mn) and this album has far more innuendo then her other ones (it's to big, it's to long, it's to wide, it won't fit, i love his big ego)

First disc great, second, not so much!

I am........Sasha Fierce is a mishmash of songs. The first disc is pretty much all of the positive songs, think Halo and an amazing rendition of Ave Maria. Then the second disc, not so much. This contains "Single Ladies", but also has the worst in this album, "Video Phone", where she is very explicit. Also, in "Diva" the chorus restates "A diva is a female version of a hussler", "Now you goin to be talkin Sh**", and "Where your Ba**s?" When you first listen to "Radio" it sounds more explicit than it actually is. (It's about being in love with your radio because it won't let you down.) However, she just couldn't resist putting in the line (It comes with a giggle and everything!) "And mama never freaked out when she heard it go boom/Cuz she knew we were in the zone". There are also some fairly racy liner photos. My reccomendation would be to give your kids the first cd, but not the second one. The better songs are on the first anyway. (Although, I have to say I do have some memories associated with the songs on the second cd. Just gotta say that, and no they're not dirty ones if that's what you're thinking. LOL!!)

  5. I rate this title off for age 2 and give it 2.0
    • My concerns are:

    • Inappropriate language
    • Negative message
    • Negative role models

    No thank you.

I don't remember her cussing in her younger days. Now, all her talk about God is out the window. She says & does "more" than what I care my kids to be singing or looking at. I'll pass.
