Why We Rated This iffy for Ages 16–17

What to watch out for

  • Messages:

Describes the kind of moderately intense partying that most college kids experiment with: "That party last night was awfully crazy / Pass out at 3 wake up at 10 / Go out to eat then do it again."
  • Violence:

    Not an issue.
  • Sex:

Talks about getting a girl "completely naked" but also encourages sexual responsibility: "Don't have sex if she's too gone / When it comes to condoms put two on."
  • Language:

    One f-bomb: "Let's get f--ked up."
  • Consumerism:

    Not an issue.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

References to beer and marijuana -- "drink my beer and smoke my weed" -- but nothing harder.

What Parents Need to Know

This review of "I Love College" (CD single) was written by Stephanie Bruzzese

Parents need to know that while this song includes a few eyebrow-raisers, the party circumstances it describes are far from the drug-, violence-, and sex-filled scenes in other rapper's songs.

What’s the Story?

I LOVE COLLEGE is the huge hit from suburban-college-kid-turned-rapper Asher Roth. The song has become the unofficial anthem of college students everywhere, since it gives a blow-by-blow account of what the vast majority of these students do on weekends (and even a few weekdays): party and make out into the wee morning hours, sleep through half of the next day, then do it all over again the following night. The tune also appears in the track list of Roth's soon-to-be-released debut CD, Asleep in the Bread Aisle.

Is It Any Good?

Much as the few candid references to beer, pot, and nakedness may make parents cringe, the song's lyrics and themes are fairly mild compared to a lot of today's hardcore rap. As an artist, Roth's vocal tone is reminiscent of Eminem's, though he lacks Slim Shady's gifted timing and delivery. The accompanying music has an easy-going, reggae-like quality that undoubtedly adds to the song's appeal among the fun-loving college crowd.

    Ehh, iffy song.

This song is dirty. Haha. I like it, but its really dirty. The chorus says "That party last night was awfully crazy, I wish we taped it... i danced my a** off and had this one girl completely naked." It has sexuality including that, and talk about sex and condoms, and it also uses the F word and the A word, etc. There might be some more language, i forget. They also talk about getting drunk and smoking.

  8. I rate this title off for age 12 and give it 3.0

    Sure, not lyrically amazing

But give Roth his credit until the end of the song, the "Do something crazy" chant annoyed me, but otherwise fairly catchy song talkin' about how good college is (well, at least the partying aspect.)

  9. I rate this title iffy for age 15 and give it 4.0

Not Best on Album, but still good

This is the first single from "Asleep in the Bread Isle". There is some sexual things and language in it, and it is one of the most innapproprite on the album. The song isnt as bad as some of the other songs you'd here on the radio
