The good stuff

  • Messages:

    The lone female is strong-willed and intelligent and holds her own among her three guy friends. Themes of friendship and teamwork are recurring but often get lost amid the flashy action. Parents and most other adult figures are completely absent from the show.

What to watch out for

  • Violence & scariness:

    Scenes often include sword fights, laser shots, and explosive battles. Monsters often have built-in weapons like razor-sharp feet and dagger teeth. One episode includes a crash landing of an airplane. None of the violence results in lasting injury to humans, though the monsters occasionally are killed.

  • Sexy stuff:

    Female character wears skimpy skirts.

  • Language:

    Potty talk like "kick your butt."

  • Consumerism:

    As the show was spawned from a line of card games and toys, the series could be seen as a stand-alone marketing tool.

  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

    Not an issue.

What Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that this series is reminiscent of most other anime shows in which a team of friends battles a revolving cast of increasingly bizarre and dangerous enemies. Its far-fetched plot and allusions to previous Yu-Gi-Oh! shows make it most easily enjoyed by long-time followers of the characters. Violence is prevalent throughout the series but only leads to injury or death for non-human characters. Monsters can be quite ferocious, ruling this one out for the littlest viewers.

Families Can Talk About

  • Families can talk about the ties between TV shows and marketing. How does the media affect what we buy? Why do we want what we see on TV? Parents should remind their kids that the characters' lives are completely unrealistic, with no parents to be seen and the ability to hop a plane across the world. The show also touches on Egyptology, much of which seems based on little fact and will need clarification.

YU-GI-OH! CAPSULE MONSTERS is the latest installment in the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise, which originally was based on a popular kids' card game. This version introduces a new board game called Capsule Monsters and immerses the show's characters into the real-life land of the monsters themselves.

Is It Any Good?

Much like the Pokemon phenomenon, Yu-Gi-Oh! (the show and the game) has a fan following that spans gender and age divides -- for them, this show might hold some intrigue as yet another chapter in the apparently never-ending story. But most other viewers will probably be turned off by the confusing plot and character intricacies that are virtually indecipherable without a familiarity with the other series and/or the accompanying card game.
