Statement from Common Sense Media on the National Broadband Plan
For immediate release
Monday, March 15, 2010

San Francisco, CA – Common Sense Media CEO and founder James Steyer released this statement today regarding tomorrow’s announcement of the National Broadband Plan:

“The National Broadband Plan that the Federal Communications Commission will announce tomorrow – especially its focus on digital literacy and education programs – will go a long way to help parents and educators raise a generation of media-savvy and digitally responsible kids. The plan, if instituted, will give millions of children and families in low-income and other underserved areas equal access to the information and opportunities of this digital age. With increased access comes an increased need to ensure kids everywhere are equipped with the tools and information they need to use broadband in smart, safe ways that will bring real improvements to their education and their economic futures. The FCC is showing true leadership on this issue, and making it clear that it will manage the public spectrum in a way that serves the public’s interests, including education, health care, energy, and public safety. At Common Sense Media, we will continue our digital literacy and citizenship work with parents and in schools across the country to make sure this agenda becomes a reality for kids and families in our lifetimes.”
