COMMON SENSE MEDIA URGES PRESIDENT BUSH TO SUPPORT THE CHILD SAFE VIEWING LAW
Bill Helps Parents Manage Media Content in their Kids’ Lives
Common Sense Media urges President Bush to sign into law S. 602, the Child Safe Viewing Act. If signed into law, S. 602 will help highlight for parents the best tools available to make smart, informed choices about the media in their kids’ lives. It will also examine educational tools that will help kids make their own smart choices as they grow older and encourage the ongoing development of new technologies.
Kids today can access video and other content through hundreds of TV channels and many other platforms and devices, including the Internet and mobile phones. A generation ago, parents could manage the media their kids were viewing by keeping an eye on the television and choosing movies carefully. Today, parents need better tools to keep up with the rapidly changing 24/7 media world, and the Child Safe Viewing Act is an essential step to improving those tools.
James Steyer, founder and CEO of Common Sense Media, said of the bill: “This legislation is an effort to give parents more tools to manage the media in their kids’ lives, and the impact the media has on their health and development. This is also the first attempt to really look at all the new ways that kids are accessing content, including through wireless devices. Common Sense Media encourages additional steps by government, industry, and fellow advocates that will get the best technologies and information into parents' hands.”
