President and CEO, Miller Publishing Group

Robert L. Miller, the president and CEO of Miller Publishing Group LLC (MPG), began his career in magazine publishing in 1974 when he joined Time Inc., in New York, in the Controllers Department. He ascended through the ranks assuming a number of senior management positions, most notably publisher of Sports Illustrated at 33, he was the youngest in the magazine's history -- Worldwide Publisher of Time and Executive Vice President of Time Inc., in which role all the New York-based titles (People, Entertainment Weekly, Fortune, Time, Sports Illustrated, Money, etc.) reported to him.


In 1991, Mr. Miller was named President and CEO of Time Inc. Ventures (TIV) based in Los Angeles, where he oversaw Time Inc.'s regional, special interest and international titles. His portfolio consisted of 17 domestic and 8 international magazines, including Sunset, Southern Living, Parenting, Travel & Leisure, Cooking Light, Health and Time International. Mr. Miller also spearheaded magazine acquisitions and development. His most successful launches were Martha Stewart Living and Vibe.


While at TIV, Mr. Miller also joined forces with Telepictures, Warner Bros. TV's reality-based arm, to co-produce several television programs, among them Extra, a syndicated strip show that still airs and People's 20th Anniversary special.


In 1996, upon leaving Time Inc., Mr. Miller purchased its interest in Vibe and, in partnership with Quincy Jones, created Vibe Ventures. Vibe was named one of Adweek's "top 10 up-and-coming" magazines in 1996, 1997 and 1998, and received an award for "general excellence" (the magazine industry's most prestigious award) in 2002.


MPG was formed in 1997 following the acquisition of Spin (Vibe Ventures becoming Vibe/Spin Ventures), reinforcing MPG's position in the young adult music and pop culture category. In 1997, MPG purchased Where, an international visitor's guide published in over 45 markets worldwide. Also in 1997, MPG bought Tennis; Cruising World and Sailing World from the New York Times Company.


Mr. Miller, 54, was born in Los Angeles and grew up in San Francisco and Darien, Conn. He received a B.A. in American Civilization from Williams College in 1971 and an MBA from the Columbia School of Business in 1974. He lives in Los Angeles with his wife Kelly and their two daughters.
