Common Sense Media (www.commonsensemedia.org) is the leading non-profit, non-partisan organization dedicated to improving the impact of media and entertainment on kids and families.
Based in the SOMA district of San Francisco, we are an innovative online company that rates and reviews media to help parents make better choices about the media their kids consume. In four years, Common Sense Media has grown rapidly and attracted significant funding from individuals and foundations. Our content is distributed online through partners like AOL, MSN, Netflix and iVillage; and on screen through partners including Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Cox Communications and TiVo.
Position Summary
Common Sense Media is seeking a talented and enthusiastic individual to join our team as Controller.
The Controller oversees the day-to-day general ledger activities of Common Sense Media's finance group, is responsible for the timely monthly close of the general ledger and preparation of the draft monthly financial statements, assists with the annual financial audit and preparation of the tax returns, performs the payroll function, oversees the office manager and administrative staff, and assists with facilities management.
Key Duties and Responsibilities include the following but are not limited to:
- Maintain the MIP general ledger and related subsystems
- Prepare invoices and post earned income/deferred income in a timely and accurate manner
- Responsible for the timely deposit of cash receipts
- Prepare or oversee that the bank and other reconciliations are performed in a timely manner
- Responsible that invoices are properly coded
- Prepare journal entries and approve journal entries prepared by the office manager and/or administrative staff, when applicable
- Ensures that all fixed asset purchases and in-kind donations are properly recorded and valued in the general ledger and fixed asset module on a monthly basis
- Prepares or oversees the semi-monthly payroll and payroll journal entries and regular reporting as needed
- Updates the monthly reports that track grant income, grants receivable, and releases from restrictions
- Prepare the journal entries to properly release restricted grant income in conjunction with the VP of Finance
- Performs the monthly accounting close, including reconciliation of all general ledger accounts
- Produces monthly cash and accrual financial statements
- Entering the annual budget into MIP
- Provide accounts receivable and payable reports on regular basis to the VP of Finance
- Assists in the annual physical count of fixed assets count and reconciliation to the general ledger
- Assists in developing and account manual and accounting policies and procedures
- Performing trainings on the usage of accounting forms and accounting procedures
- Prepares the annual sales and use tax returns
- Assists with the annual financial audit and 990 workpapers
- Performs and files 1099s in a timely manner
- Provides support during the annual budgeting process, periodic forecasts, and ongoing cash forecasting and cash and investment management
- Assists with new employee orientations and performs the administration of the health and other employee benefits
- Work closely with the Office Manager to develop, implement and facilitate purchase order processes. Work with CSM vendors to obtain the most favorable terms
- Maintenance of the contracts database
- Other duties as assigned
Key Qualifications:
- BS or equivalent in accounting required, CPA or MBA a plus
- Working knowledge and experience with MIP and ADP
- 3-5 years of accounting experience, including a minimum of 2 years in a supervisory capacity required
- Demonstrated leadership, communication, delegation, and management skills
- Strong organizational and planning skills
- Proven ability to multitask in a dynamic environment, while adhering to deadlines
- Proven ability to work with minimal direction and as a member of a team
- Thorough understanding of sophisticated accounting systems, complex accounting environments, general accepted accounting principles, and non profit accounting
- Experience working with or supervising payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable and general ledger required
- Thorough working knowledge of GAAP required
- Proficiency with MS Windows and MS Excel required
- Strong oral and written communication skills required
- Proven ability to communicate with a variety of audiences, including clerical staff, professional staff, CSM staff outside of the accounting function, auditors, vendors and Directors required.
- Ability to evaluate and recommend solutions for complex problems required
- Ability to analyze, interpret and explain accounting, financial, and business concepts, rules, policies, and procedures required
- Strong mathematical, analytical ability required
- Strong reconciliation skills required
- Self-starter with ability to multi-task and action oriented team player
- Outgoing personality with a good phone manner
- Strong writing skills and technological aptitude
- An interest in pop culture/kids and media/entertainment
- Experience in small, dynamic and rapidly evolving environments a plus
