What parents need to know

Ease of play

The controls work smoothly and the general concept is easy enough for even little kids to understand. Puzzles get more challenging as you go along, but there are definitive strategies that, once you learn them, should carry you through.

Violence & scariness

You launch the cadets from a cannon, using them as human missiles to destroy the evil robots and free their friends. The cadets never seem hurt (they simply sit on the ground after landing) and robotic enemies that are destroyed vanish after a small, quick boom.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Cannon Cadets is an action-based physics puzzler with a loose plot about an evil monkey who wants to remove fun from the galaxy and, to that end, kidnaps some of the fun-loving Cannon Cadets. The remaining cadets come to the rescue, to save their friends and keep fun alive. They launch themselves from cannons to knock down the fortress-like structures in which evil robots hold their friends captive. The only characters that ever even appear to get hurt in all of this are the robotic villains (which explode in a quick poof). Kids can learn a lot about actual physics from a game like this, and they can express their creativity and imagination with the level editor.

QUALITY

In terms of gameplay, CANNON CADETS feels an awful lot like the app phenomenon Angry Birds (the special powers of the different cadets characters even mimic those of the uniquely powered birds in that game). But Cannon Cadets is more than just a clone. The physics puzzles here are just as fun and challenging; the HD graphics are a gorgeous treat; the vibrant and colorful look of the game -- and its fun-loving tone and atmosphere -- make it feel a lot more kid-friendly; and the creativity allowed by the level editor raises the whole experience up a notch. This is just a flat-out fun app that deserves a lot more attention.
