Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Children’s Stories – FarFaria is a digital library of more than 100 ebooks for kids, with more books added each week. Parents and kids can browse the books by genre and within each genre can search by title, release date, and (impressively) by reading level. The format of the books is simple with illustrations and text boxes on each page. They are digitized versions of the originals and have no audio support or interactive features. FarFaria is free for 30 days, with a subscription fee of $3.99 per month after that.

Engagement, Approach, Support

Engagement

Makes it easy for parents to surround their kids with books they'll enjoy and benefit from, although the books here don't have the interactive qualities kids might expect from a smartphone or tablet book.

Learning Approach

Kids can learn a variety of topics through reading. But because the books have no narration or extra features, it's up to kids and families to navigate the reading experience and monitor learning.

Support

Kids may need a little help at first, as there are no verbal instructions. There are links for parents to connect to Facebook, email, and the App Store.

  • applying information

Kids can learn about a variety of topics given the app's wide selection of books. Each of FarFaria's nine worlds represents a different genre of books for kids to explore. For example, Adventure Land includes titles like "Jack and the Bean Stalk," and Good Land includes books about honesty, determination, love, and confidence. FarFaria's extensive library can be a solid literacy tool, as long as kids are eager to read and have adults nearby to offer feedback.

What's it about?

The opening screen of FARFARIA shows a scrolling menu of featured books. Kids and parents can choose "Explore the World" to browse books by genre. Within each genre, they can browse titles alphabetically, by release date, or by reading level. The reading level ranges from Level P for pre-readers to Level 4 for fluent readers. The books have no interactive elements, so kids simply swipe to turn pages. A top menu gives kids the option to exit, "Add to Favorites" for easy access later, or return to the beginning of the book.

QUALITY

Children’s Stories – FarFaria makes it easy for parents to surround their kids with books. While the books here don't have the interactive qualities kids might expect from a smartphone or tablet book, the app does offer a wide variety of ebooks for a moderate price. For families who read a lot but don't have the time to go to the library, $3.99 a month might seem like a worthwhile investment. In addition, FarFaria helps parents choose appropriate books for their kids by classifying books by genre and reading level.

Families can talk about...

  • Select favorite books in FarFaria with your kids; encourage them to try reading from all the different genres.
