Are Kids Becoming Immune to Celebrity Escapades? Are Parents?

Miley Cyrus did a pole dance during her performance at the 2009 Teen Choice Awards. And Vanessa Hudgens is now a two-time nude photos offender -- but she's in good company. Lindsey Lohan, Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, and other young female celebs have had scandalous photos (nude or otherwise) appear online -- and their young fans can still find these images in the archives that are accessible through even the most basic Internet search. But while parents cringe, kids seem increasingly unfazed. Are they becoming immune to celebrity scandal? And how do these incidents impact the images they post of themselves -- or their friends -- online?

I don't like how kids are opinions are represented
by the media, I mean really, I hate it when everyone thinks that, every single twelve-year-old likes "High School Musical or Hannah Montana" or some other corny series, really, I don't like that stuff, and so what its just a preformance by some teen idol, who held a pole for support and then everyone says its pole dancing, seriously, people are just being over-dramatic about, nothing. When it comes to kids, becoming immune to celebrity escapades, that's bogus, the truth is most kids just don't care about some idol's controversy, which is why we are usually unfazed by it, because celebrities aren't people we care about sure, we may like their music, movies or books or whatever but, kids nowadays have their own better things to worry about, like grades and such. Also, this doesn't really effect how kids post online photos of themselves, unless they are a complete idiot who can't even be themself, and thinks that they have to post naked photos of themselves on the internet.
just because some celebrity does it, this isn't important to a kid at all, parents just get paranoid about their child, imitating things celebrities do, but really if you are a smart parent who actually knows how to teach their kids about right from wrong and how they can't and shoulden't imitate, then what is there to be so upset about!? Also, I'm not flaming or trying to upset anyone, this is just my opinion, I mean hey , adults should be at fault along with children, because the child should be able to think for themself correctly, and the parent should make sure that they actually do that instead of giving in to peer-pressure and all of that so called "celebrity influence".

I guess it depends on who you ask. I have family that think nothing of the inuendos that their girls are watching on TV. I on the other hand, notice EVERYTHING and I am hesitent about a lot when it comes to my kids and what I let them view. I can handle the mild violence type stuff...its the inuendo to other things that really burns me up. I wish the media would let my kids BE kids without bringing up mature content at every turn! (What happened to the innocence of childhood? Trust me, I am no prude but come on people, how young do we need to indoctrinate them into the ADULT world???) I have to sit with the remote in my hand even at commercials because who knows what they might say or do??? Even the freakin perscription commercials. Do I really need to explain this stuff to my 5 year old??? This topic gets me all worked up, lol.

I think the REAL issue is that parents need to wake up and realize that society has CHANGED...not just since the 50's...but even more so since WE were kids. I am only 34, but when I was a kid, commercials only sold stuff, not "extra" if you get my drift. TV shows did not use curse words and anything remotely inappropriate for kids did not even come on the cable channels until after 8 pm! Things have changed people. You can't just allow your kids to hop on every bandwagon, sit back, and then freak out when the newest "role model" has fallen. These are KIDS being role models to KIDS. What adult here has not made some mistake or another as a kid? Either use it as a teachable moment or don't allow your kids to idolize this stuff!

I can't speak for kids because I am not one and I do not let my (still young) kids watch teen shows etc. My rule of thumb is if the person is older than they are, chances are they are going to be dealing with things my kids are not ready for yet. End of story. When my children are at those ages, then I will use these things as teachable moments, but I will always warn them of the idolization factor and how every person falls at some point in life.

well miley out 2 be ashame of herself hmmm

Posted by Lifeisalive on 09/16/2009 (kid contributor, age 12)

Hm.
It's pole dancing to hold onto a poll on an ice cream cart to keep her from tripping and falling off. And I guess sliding down ONCE and immediately going back up into non-sexual positions is not pole dancing. Might as well call it sexual to crouch in vents in video games. Seriously grow up you idiots.

Posted by MileyySupport on 09/15/2009 (teen contributor, age 14)

In my opinion i don't think Miley was pole dancing. It was more for balance pretty much all she did was hold on to it while singing. At one part she went 'down then up'(she kneeled down quickly and then stood up)and then shook her hips at the line 'movin my hips like yeah' She was wearing jewelry,a hat and tank top and shorts, thats not really an innapropriate outfit and pole dancing is when people strip and sexually dance which Miley did neither. The media is honestly just looking for things to point out wrong and make her miserable because they are no life losers and anyone who tries to make a bad person out of a confused teenage celebrity who is just trying to make people happy and find herself is cruel and evil if you get enjoyment out of being a hater you are seriously MESSED UP.Sometimes i think Miley is pushing the edge on trying to be more grown up but then i think she is 16 and thats what they do and honestly she is a pure and celibate so i respect and support her and i will ALWAYS be her biggest fan

Posted by kaytopian on 09/13/2009 (kid contributor, age 11)

miley cyrus should NOT have done that i think we can all agree on that. i used to be fan but up until the time she have those almost nude picture i havent cared for her much. she dresses like a tramp and her performance was not acceptable. as for the other girls like vannessa, she has always dressed like a tramp and as if its not bad enough she published naked pics of herself once she did it again! the young women are DEFFENENTLY NOT ROLE MODELS!

give her a break. its not like SHE made up the dance. she just went along with it. people judge celeberities and they dont even know their situation or anything. it really bothers me. plus, miley is a teenager, and maybe she didnt realize that alot of younger kids would be watching that. also theres this really good advice columnist her email is askamandaanything@gmail.com if your a girl who has boy problems school problems friend problems or anything like that you should email her with your question she is really safe and you have a garunteed response also its free

Posted by kh2master on 09/9/2009 (teen contributor, age 13)

is she starting to become a pole dancer? i bet Vanessa Hudgens is becoming a bigger slut. but yeah i had seen that before and i don't like her skimpy outfit where people can see her bra. no one wants to see people's bras. her shorts were too short.

I personally dont think that Miley is teaching kids that look up to her the right thing. If I were a celebrity and I knew that I had role models that are so young, I wouldnt go anywhere close to that pole. And Miley's backup dancers aren't helping anything either, with their short short skirts. Shes ruining her career little by little and most of all shes most likely going to end up being just another Britney Spears.

Posted by nevrsurrender on 09/2/2009 (parent contributor)

Common Sense Adult, I'm sorry, but I think it's rather ignorant to compare girls wearing short skirts to girls getting pregnant. This was blown way out of proportion guys. Most of you are acting like prudes. And to answer Your question, yes, kids are immune to Celebrity scandals. They just don't care.

I'm so dissappointed in her--she is a wonderful entertainer and would NEVER have to do that. Have you seen Carrie Underwood dancing around a pole? She is a teenager and I feel her parents have been in entertainment too long and don't recognize bad taste. And I don't let my 6 year old watch very much, though I'd like to. Everyone else does and she always feels likes she's missing out. Oh well, I'm the mom.

I SAW MILEY "POLE DANCING" AT THE TEEN CHOICE AWARDS IT WASNT A BIG DEAL U PPL PROBALY DIDNT EVEN SEE IT SHE WASNT POLE DANCING SHE WAS HOLDING ON TO SOMETHING TO KEEP FROM FALLING OFF THE ICE CREAM TRUCK SO WHAT STOP MAKING A BIG DEAL OUT OF EVERYTHING YOU PEOPLE LOOK LIKE FOOLS

I think that since kids love the show Hannah Montana, where MIley Cyrus is showed as a normal teen and a superstar at the same time, they think that Miley Cyrus is a goody-goody. But I think that she got carried away as she got more famous and is now acting like she is the queen of the world. Kids don't notice the bad things she does because they are too involved in the "good" in her. They can't see what she is turning into.

Posted by myparanoia on 08/21/2009 (kid contributor, age 12)

I am twelve years of age and I am extremely offended by the fact that people in my age group are being portrayed as people who are so easily influenced by people we don't even know. I you don't want your kid stripping, don't let them near a pole.8)

As a guy, girlfriends these days will do this for us, not get nude but they will pole dance. It's not really that exciting to see Miley Cyrus doing it, but it effects a young girls mind. She should be setting a better example than this. These days you could pay the girls at my school to do that kind of thing though.

Posted by Lifeisalive on 08/18/2009 (kid contributor, age 12)

N-nonsense Barnacle Boy! >:)

She didn't do anything bad, it's not like she did it slow as she took are clothes off, its not like she went into the crowd and rubbed against some of the men. Seriously, she's not a freaking slut she's a teenager. Hey parents, if you think Miley is bad, check your teenagers, they are make out machines at Boy-girl parties, seriously, you might want to have serious talks with them to tell them to wait for sexual contact when they're either old enough or Married. And the thing about Vannessa being naked in pictures, well there are two stories, both are possible, the ones claiming it was her intention to have them leaked is untrue, my belief is the one that she sent it to her boyfriend ONLY and another possible one is that they are very old. Your are being obnoxious Michael Buckly, and parents. Miley is a clean kid, she is no slut. Her pictures are normal for 15-16 year olds. even 13 year olds took semi-nude pics....*shivers*

Kids and Teens, like myself, hear this stuff blown way out of proportion all the time. It's become such a common occurrence that it's not interesting. Celebs are probably using these photos just to get their name out there. The only thing worse are over-opinionated haters that nitpick at it only spreading more. I don't think little girls would be interested in seeing these celebs naked anyways, older men would though. Also, It's called child-block and search filters. Parents shouldn't blame the media for what kids do, they should use the media to teach their children what not to do. Don't use the media to teach your children, as the celebrities are in it for the money and fame. In topic: I don't think Miley was pole dancing per-say as she was bending down to sing to the crowd and the pole was so she wouldn't fall off. The uncalled for outfit was probable part of the act with the "Trailer park" theme. Again, prime example of where good parenting comes in.

Posted by luv2sing0723 on 08/14/2009 (teen contributor, age 13)

People are blowing this WAYYY out of proportion. Seriously, I'm pretty sure that the only reason the pole was there was so she could hold on to it and not fall off the ice cream cart. I saw the video of the rehearsal and it was nooo where near as bad. She didn't lean down at all. I think that the only reason she leaned down at the performance was to like sing to her fans or something. I don't think she was doing what everybody is trying to say she was. And the outfit-- that is all show. What is she going to perform in jeans and a t-shirt? It's all show. She's not sending any kind of message. She will not become Britney!!! She will NOT.

She was pole dancing though-- but your right it was a moving ice cream cart that she had to hold to. However, she didn't need to slide up and down it!

Posted by suefromnc on 08/14/2009 (adult contributor)

I saw the teen choice awards and I couldn't believe that Miley's parents were sitting in the audience the whole time! Did they really think that was soooo cute!!! Not to mention the outfit she wore on stage when she was presenting a life time achievement award to Brittany. The front was opened all the way from her neck to her belly button. I can't believe her Mom thought that was appropriate for her 17 year old to wear. Of course, should we be surprised--I mean there was Vogue layout and they dropped her at that too! Miley is our next Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton, etc. My girls have stopped watching her and my tween thought she looked trashy at the Teen Choice Awards!!

Posted by cinnamonbear on 08/13/2009 (parent contributor)

I have a 7 year old girl. I had adults!!! telling me 2 years ago what a sweet girl and tv show it is. First of all Miley dresses like the girls walking the streets. I will use Miley, Brittny etc. as examples of what not to act like when the time is appropriate. I have worked hard (and so far succedded) in telling my daughter what bad role models these shows and teens are. Miley will probably end up pregnant before she is 18.

Posted by tommyross on 08/13/2009 (adult contributor)

Anonymous19 seams to be getting the answer, It's all about monney, like Miley doesent have enough already, I blame her handlersand parents. I thought Billy Ray would know better, it's his daughter, she is the hand tht god sent to us to save the next 3,4,or 5 Generations.I wonder what her Papy would say about it.

Posted by tommyross on 08/13/2009 (adult contributor)

I think this is way blowen out of shape, I do agree that she squated down, but its hard to really tell if it was for the reasons everyone wonts to beleave. I saw the rehursal tape they are showing on Miley World and it is noware as recy. I think is trying to get fan that she thinks have left her, but this is not the way to do it. I pray for her every night, and really belive she can lead the kids for the next 3 or 4 Generations. Lets all pray for her,& Emily Osment.!

The pole is just like a bed, everyone knows what it's there for and what is being sold. This is sad.

Posted by christiecarrollton on 08/13/2009 (parent contributor)

Miley,
You are breaking my achy-breaky heart. The pole is only one reason why this offends me.

Posted by textingqueen on 08/13/2009 (kid contributor, age 12)

OK, I do agree people try to make something into something else thats big and not true. But i also agree that Miley, Lindsey Lohan, Brittany Spears, Paris Hilton and Vannesa hudgens do things that are not innapropriate like leaked out nude pics, bad attitude, DUI, and other crazy stuff like that. These young people need to settle down!

Miley was NOT pole dancing people, gosh!! She was gripping the pole so she woulden't fall of the cart.
She was in heels on a moving icecream cart! Call me crazy but I would want something to hold onto. She squatted down twice, call the cops! It was the TEEN choice awards, not the little kid choice awards after all! Just leave her alone

Posted by Common Sense Adult on 08/12/2009 (parent contributor)

Miley sends very inapropriate messages to todays kids. She is far from being a role model. The Vanity Fair photos were totally inapropriate. Children need to be allowed to stay children. Girls should not wear mini skirts that stop just below the but. Yet I see many mothers walking around with their daughters dressed this way. Yet they are the first to claim ignorance when their daughters end up pregnant. And don't get me started on Britney Spears and her escapades not wearing underwear. You need to tell your daughter that these are poor choices for a role model.

Posted by mydaughtersamileyfan on 08/12/2009 (parent contributor)

i love britney spears and miley probally had a balance problem so she bnalsanced on a pole my daughter has a balance problem 2! miley is still a rolemodel but more for 10+

Posted by rainydayqueen on 08/12/2009 (parent contributor)

Miley was not pole dancing during her performance and i am going to tell what REALLY happened. Miley was supposed to stand and sing on a moving ice cram cart she held on to the pole for balance especially when her dancers pushed it across the stage. She held onto the pole and sang her song it seems everything she does is a 'scandal' these days so stop unfairly judging her.Vanessa Hudgens isn't my favorite star but her pictures weren't nude just topless Ashley Greene from Twilight is the real nudist

I watched Miley on the pole and personally I could care less if she did a dance on a pole but i must admit that it was totally uncalled for.It wasn't spcifically pole dancing but it was close if she went any farther.Miley is a bad role model.I think she gets a kick out of doing this kind of stuff. There was even a thing on the news or something where they interviewed Miley and she said she likes this kind of crazy stuff. Also there are plenty of other reasons Miley's a bad rm.If you don't believe me then google-Miley Cyrus Risque photos.

Immune? Immune to what exactly? If anything, these celebrities are showing kids just how much you can screw up when living in your own "fantasy world" of riches and fame. Girls at my school didn't go "OH I WANNA BE JUST LIKE THAT GIRL!" when they saw stuff like that, in fact, most girls don't copy celebrity's' lifestyles anymore. And I would agree that Miley Cyrus has horrible music, and is just another Disney cash-cow along with the Jonas Brothers (as if the mega-corporation didn't have enough money already). I really wish old 1990's Disney came back, when they actually had decent shows on their network and focused on story rather than money, like the Gargoyles series (but of course over-protective parent groups wanted the shows removed because it was so called "too violent").

Posted by Lemon5 on 08/12/2009 (adult contributor)

Welcome to the media. What I want to know is why she is so damn popular? I mean really, why? Go listen to some real music, please. Break out the classics. You can't go wrong with Stairway to Heaven, or Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds.

she went too too i will put too many too too far

Posted by JjSmihal on 08/11/2009 (adult contributor)

I watched two You Tube videos before posting because I wanted to see what this was about before I put in my two cents. I didn't see a stripper on a pole. I did question why the ice cream cart was even brought out. Miley was led across the stage and helped onto the cart and then used the pole to keep her balance. She lunged to her toes once. They wheeled her across the stage and helped her off. Personally, I was much more concerned with her (lack of) outfit. I have to point out, Miley Cyrus is a minor and is not coming up with her songs, moves or outfits on her own. Some adults are riding the money wave and are amping up the things she does. These adults are telling her what to do and she is doing it!

Posted by stargirl4peace on 08/11/2009 (teen contributor, age 14)

You know who I really feel sorry for? Them. Miley, Vanessa, Britney, everyone. They actually think what they're doing is OK. Being a celeb is like living in a fantasy world, and it's hard to seperate the good from the bad. Also, why are we bashing them? Didn't most of you, the parents, do stuff like that when you were a teen? Maybe not poledance or take naked pictures, but there are similarites. Teens today listen to raunchy music, and so did you. Teens today over-sexualize themselves, and so did you. (Remember "Make love, not war"?) You can't blame the stars for what you, and almost every other teenager in the world, are doing. And if you don't want your kids watching that kind of thing, turn off the TV. You say that they'll find it anyway, and maybe that's true. But you can always fire back with "That's them, you're you."

Posted by sarahdipity on 08/11/2009 (teen contributor, age 15)

If parents are so concerneed with how badly influencial the media is on their children - then they shouldn't let them watch. Parents hate when Miley pole dances and when Britney comes out with a risque song - yet, they are the ones who turn on the TV and buy the albums. Parents can control what their kids see and what they can't - so don't get mad that your son or daughter is googling naked picures, when your the one who put the lap top in their bedroom.

"Are kids becoming immune to celebrity scandal?" I didn't know that you had to build an immunity for looking at naked women. What I find offensive is that CommonSense would categorize Vanessa Hudgens with Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, Miley Cyrus, and Lindsay Lohan just so they can have an article run to try to make their own stupid points again. Vanessa Hudgens is just a normal girl who got her private pictures stolen and leaked onto the web. She isn't a two time offender (I wouldn't even say that she's an offender of anything to start with), these new photos were from the first batch of photos that were leaked. The person who is in possession of these pictures decided to leak these pictures at two different times. The first batch after High School Musical 2 and the second batch before the release of Bandslam.
