What Parents Need to Know

This review of Around the House (What Can You Find series) was written by Karyn Wellhousen

Parents need to know that this book exposes toddlers to new vocabulary and opportunities for counting, color recognition, and identifying pets. Objects are clearly labeled, and many items are familiar to most toddlers. After several read-alouds, older toddlers will point to and name objects, but relative sizes are confusing.

Book Summary

What can you find around the house? A toy train, blocks, and nesting cups are familiar items to many young children, and pictures of these and other toys, plus other common household objects, will catch and hold their attention. Read-aloud activities include pointing and naming pictures, as well as finding the teddy bear conspicuously hidden on each page. Toys, foods, pets, vehicles, and tools typically found around the house are pictured with matching word labels. Most of the items will be familiar to toddlers, but some will be introduced for the first time..

Three to six objects are arranged on each page, and a border of small sketches hides a teddy-bear logo on each page. This serves as a precursor to Where's Waldo?-type books, with hidden items, for older children.

Is It Any Good?

This book provides many opportunities for object recognition. Each item pictured is labeled with matching text. While many objects are familiar, parents may need to introduce vocabulary and the uses of items children may not recognize. For example, a 3-year-old boy was utterly baffled by the photograph of a pink potty-training chair.

Photographs typically offer realistic representations, but disproportionate sizes may be confusing. For example, a plastic fork-and-spoon set looms larger than an adjacent table lamp, and paint brushes are longer than a motorcycle is tall. Also, a repetitive border topping each page distracts from the concepts presented.
