Superb novel with superb messages.
Because of Winn-Dixie tells the story of India Opal Buloni, a 10-year-old girl who moves to a new town and doesn't know anybody. She is teased by the kids at church, and she has no friends. But all of that changes one day, when she is sent to a local Winn-Dixie store and finds a stray dog running around. She, much to her father's dismay, adopts the dog, and names it Winn-Dixie after the store. Winn-Dixie helps Opal make plenty of friends in this small southern town. This is a fantastic book, but some of the content may be too much for kids. Opal's mother has abandoned her, and we learn that a little girl's brother drowned. Language consists of a few utterances of "hell". We learn that Gloria and Opal's mother were alcoholics (Gloria also has a "mistake tree" that has beer bottles hanging from it). However, the book has wonderful messages of tolerance and friendship. This is a great book for kids 8 and older.

A must read!
Winn-Dixie is about a wonderful dog that does a lot of funny things. For example, if she smiles too big, she sneezes. I really like this story because its very exiting to read...I wanted to read and read and read.

Beautifully written, moving story. A quick read.
This was a lovely story with a lot of well-written imagery that kids can understand. The story has some sad issues: a mother that has left and another minor characters brother has drowned, but I think the book deals with them in a manner that children can understand and empathize. The main character is a young girl who learns, through the loyalty of her dog, that life is full of surprises and we grow through our experiences. I read this story with my 7 year-old and we were able to talk about these issues together. The chapters are short and make for perfect "bedtime" reading.

I thought it was a cute story, I used to LOVE it when I was younger, but now.. I guess I just grew out of it. Kate DiCamillo portrayed WInn Dixie very well, reminded me greatly of my past puppy dog.

very touching story!!
I love Kate DiCamillo, she has written some VERY good books for kids. One of the reasons that I like her so much is because she is a local author for me, she lives in MN. YAY!! but anyway, this books is all about this young girl who finds a dog at the Winn-Dixie Grocery Store, she takes care of the dog and names her Winn-Dixie, after the place where she found this dog. The girl has had a hard time dealing with the fact that her mom is gone. But she does live with her dad in a trailer park and he is the Priest at the local church. Winn-Dixie is the first true friend that this girl has had and they have all sorts of wild adventures together!! This is truely a sweet and touching story for EVERYONE to enjoy!!

If you haven't read it, READ IT NOW!
I loooooove this book! I saw the movie with my sixth grade class, and it is just like the book. India Opal moves to a new town, and she has no friends. Then, in the Winn-Dixie Supermarket, she sees a stray dog running around and just as the manager is about to call the pound, Opal says the dog is hers. She takes the dog in, and her social life improves. Many people in this book act nicely, except for the Dewberry boys that pick on Opal because they like her. The book is great for younger kids who are looking to read a classic.

It was stupid. I mean come on it is just a dog
i hated this book i thought that it wads horrible. I mean it is just a dog let it go in to the wild. Why would you pick up a stray ugly dog anyway? It could belong to anyone for once and maybe when they went back there you get in trouble for taking it. Also if it just a stray dog why take it home it could have some sort of disease or any thing. I would not trust it. Opal was just stupid. The preacher should have said no to opal when she wanted to bring the dog inside. Anyway.... the other part that i don't like is why they have it so the mother is not around. It is hard to grow up with out both of your parents there to help you along the way. At times Opal does not even have her dad. He always hiding away. Thinking about preaching. This book was stupid I hated it and I will never read it again.

A real tear-jerker for us sensitives!
Because of Winn-Dixie is really a delightful book. It was just perfect for me to read. I admired the display of what true friendship is. I most certainly learned life lessons like do not be judgemental and accept what you have. For a simple book it has great deeper meaning.

i felt bad
I felt bad when india started talking about how her mom abandoned her.I also think that abandoning a child is violent. If i ever become a mother, no matter how bad my child is i would abandom him or her.my favorite character was winn dixie.I liked his characteristics.
