perfect to show kids how society truly is

Love it. i read it before my son, and i thought it would be a good book to show him that life isn't what it looks like.

    great book club book

My mother/daughter book club just finished reading this book. It was an interesting sci-fi/fantasy book that got us to thinking about what the world might be like in the future if we don't take care of it now. It portrays a strong female character who despite her diminished role in her society, is able to face the challenges ahead of her when her mother dies. I'd recommend this book for kids 10 and up. It might be too far out for younger kids.

    Very depressing.

My daughter had to read this book in fifth grade. She labored through it, because of the content. Abandonment, patrimony, idol worship and one's usefulness in society, --if you were lame, you were an outcast,--all were dominant themes. I read the book, and I think it is more appropriate for 15 year olds and up. You need to take into account the developmental stage your child is going through before recommending it.

I thought this book was very good and had a good message. It didn't seem to have anything to do with The Giver, but maybe the third book will tie everything together.

    Good book

This book is quite good; there are diverse characters that overcome difficulty. There are mysteries of the Village that Kira (great role model) has to discover. But it is kind of slow at times. The plot occasionally lags. But it really is a great book.

    Gather it up!

I think the start of the book was slow going and boring, like the start of a roller coaster. However, I am glad I did not put the book done, because I loved the ending like all the other Lois Lowry books! If you liked this book you should read the Giver and the Messenger. They are good books too.

Oddly enough, even though Gathering Blue was more violent then The Giver, it seemed less so. This violence was more human then in the Giver. It's a wonderfull sequal showing a compleate contrast to the 1st book.

    Work

Gathering Blue Review Gathering Blue was a great book! I really enjoyed reading it. Every time I would pick up Gathering Blue I couldn’t wait to see what would happen next. There were some funny parts in the book like when “ Kira was going to give Matt a bath, but he ran away. Kira thought that he would probably tell his friends that he just escaped from taking a bath.” That was one of my favorite scenes in the book. When I would read Gathering Blue sometimes I wouldn’t understand something, but than my answer would come right in the next sentence or two. Gathering Blue is a great book for kids my age. It’s a great book for kid’s my age because it tells about kids who have special talents and how they work together to figure out probelms. If you read Gathering Blue you will like it.

    Makes You Think

Gathering Blue, is really different than any other Fiction book I've read, because it relates to our society, in ways that we've never thought about it. It's really interesting, and I found it to be very rich, and deep. I would recommend it to anyone 13+. It's a must read !

    Strange people! Disabilities! Lost Fathers!

This book was pretty good. There were a lot of large words, so if you are under 10, you should read it with a parent. I would highly recommend reading The Giver first, so you get an idea of what a utopia is. I didn't get any nightmares, so I guess it was good!

    Thought-Provoking

This book was very thought-provoking, exploring the possibility of a downfall of civilization, rather than a future full of amazing technologies. Younger kids might find the ending disappointing, as we never really find out what happens. However, older children should recognize that the ending was a stroke of genius, leaving the reader to figure out what happens on their own.
