Common Sense Review
Reviewed By: Mary LeCompte
One first-grader laughed her way through her first solo read of this book. Even though the text made her "kinda confused" because she wasn't used to reading words at the top and the bottom of pages, she said she'd gladly read it again and again because "it was so much fun." And she did--four times.
The story is surprising, and the language isn't too complicated or advanced for kids to enjoy reading on their own. The bright, watercolor illustrations are playful. Especially enjoyable is the painting of the jumbled-up mess that happens when Mom and Pop Nash try to catch the wolf. Illustrator Wong Herbert Yee catches the angry look on Mom Nash's face after Pop nets her, and the wolf's sly expression when he confesses to painting, not eating, the eggs.
There's also a math lesson for preschoolers: When the story explains that every day the Nashes ten hens lays ten eggs, an illustration of ten eggs is provided under the text. When five eggs are missing, the illustration shows five eggs, and so on. Little fingers love to point and count, and the egg illustrations give them a chance to do just that.
