This seasonal tale is one in a series about the ongoing adventures of the lovable Biscuit. Capucilli's text works well as a read-aloud for the very young. Her simple language is good for emergent readers, providing plenty of word repetition to inspire confidence. Capucilli weaves an amusing tale to sustain children's interest while adhering to a manageable format and style for new readers.
Schories's vivid illustrations are the focal point of the book; spreading out across every page, they convey the humor and a majority of the action of the tale. The lively drawings capture the boundless energy of a puppy and appeal to children. Preschool readers responded well to the story, which taps into their love of dress up and the thrill of Halloween. For a rambunctious read-aloud with younger children, encourage them to vocalize Biscuit's enthusiastic "woofs" throughout the tale.
