    Great book!

Harry potter and the order of the phoenix (hpootp) is a really fun book for kids 8+. Sirius's death is sad, but im sure the author wouldn't have done it if it wasn't necessary to the plot. Butterbeer is not even really alchoholic. No-one other than elves actually get drunk off it. Great read!

    Harry Rocks!

Harry continues to fight against evil in this 5th installment. But evil now takes the form of a government gone mad. The Minister of Magic does not want to face the notion that "you-know-who" has returned, so he begins to control the media by leaking lies and half-truths, character assassination, and the education of the young by dictatorial contol of what is taught in school and how it is taught. All this is done in an attempt to solidify his own power. This book would be a good vehicle to use in tandem with an exploration of dictatorships in real life. The racial hatred of "half-breeds," giants, and werewolves can stimulate discussion and exploration of our own racist ideas and attitudes. The character of Lupin, for example, can be compared to the fear and loathing that people with AIDS face every day. Explore stereotypes, linking Nazi propaganda of the Jews and how the Goblins are pictured/portrayed in the books and movies.

I loved the book but one disturbing episode verges on self-multilation

I took turns reading this book out loud with my 9 year old daughter. We both loved it but there was one chapter that I found disturbing and wanted to share with other parents. Early on in the book, Harry is sent to detention and asked to write lines "I will not..." as punishment by a sweetly sadistic new teacher. As he writes the lines with quill on paper the same words appear as cuts on his hand, due to the curse/magic the teacher has placed on him. Though the cuts are extremely painful, he decides to bear them without flinching under her gaze, and does not report the punishment (which he is quite certain is illegal) to Dumbledore. This punishment is repeated several times, each time with the cuts/scars getting deeper. I found this a pretty close and disturbing analogy to secret self-mutilation. And though this association went over my 9 year old's head - it might not go over a teen's.

So wonderful you'll be reading ahead long after your child is asleep

This is a truly great book - the best of the series. I am awed by JK Rowling's storytelling; it's complex, compelling, laugh-out-loud funny, but most importantly, a profound commentary on human relationships , particularly those between adults and chldren. I honestly came away from reading this book with a renewed sense of how I want to parent my daughter; to give her my trust, opportunities to be independent, and make mistakes but also to guide, admonish, support, and fight for her. When the most powerful magic and key to Harry's survival is not his smarts, his courage, or even the comradarie and support of his friends and teachers, but rather his mother's love . . . well that's a pretty profound message for both a mom and her daughter. Read this book with your child!

Lived Up to My High Expectation!

Fun to read and as enjoyable as all the others. The 870 pages had a few slow moments, but the charcter development and action made it a pleasure to read. Harry's getting older and it's impressive how we can track his emotional development.

Great book for pre-teens and up. It's hard to put it down.

This is a great book. J K Rowling leaves you with a cliffhanger at the end of each chapter, so it's very hard to put down. There was one instance of an inappropriate word that I wouldn't want any of my children repeating. Otherwise I found it enjoyable to read & look forward to the time that my daughter can share this book with me.

    absolutely the best so far

I had to arm wrestle my kid to get the book away from him (I put him to bed early so I could read it when he slept) and now I look forward to reading it to him out loud. Remarkably, Rowling has not only sustained her characters but she has managed to make them appropriately complex and compelling. The book is a total page turner for adults as well as kids and her world remains a place that any adult who still loves fantasy will enjoy spending 800 pages. My regret is that it ended too soon. I cannot bear waiting another three years for the next one. I enjoy nothing more than these books.

The book muggles have been waiting for!!!!

I was really looking forward to this book and was a little disapointed with the way it was writtien. First of all Harry is alway angry. He thinks everyone is against him. He is yelling at everyone at his teachers, friends and supporters. He, once again, doesn't ask for help from Dumbledor. Harry feels everyone is against him. This gets old fast. He also gets punished by not being able to do a lot of his favorite things. Harry gets his first kiss, but it wasn't handled correctly. The book tries to deal with it in a non romantic way and it makes Harry look like he didn't really want to kiss the girl but felt he had to. Some parts of the book are interesting. Snape teaches Harry how to block thoughts and Harry gets to go into Snapes darkest feelings. Harry learns that his parents were not as perfect as he thought they were. It's an interesting twist, since he has only heard only positive things about his parents. Someone close to Harry dies in the book. Harry had a lot of questions that he wanted to ask them which will now remained unanswered. The Weasly twins were great in this book. They had a lot of neat jokes and stunts that they were pulling. Overall, it's the same formula. Harry doesn't trust any of the adults and doesn't go to them for help. The kids need to fight evil in the end and come out victorious. Also I felt there were too many characters for kids to follow. She also doesn't give any introduction of what happened in the previous book. Kids will need to get updated themsleves. I still gave the book a 3 star rating. It was interesting and took me less that 24 hours to read.

As far as Harry Potter books go, this one was my least favorite. Harry is always yelling and getting moody (you'll realize why once you've read it) and his relationship with Dumbledore takes an odd twist. But even though not the best in the series, it is still a nicely told story with a fast paced plot.

    My concerns are:
    • Excessive violence
    • Inappropriate language

    One Word: Astonishing

The pacing in this book is unrivaled, except by the other Potter books, and takes monumental steps in the storyline. It is very long, and yet it never sags or becomes boring and dull even once. The Harry Potter series gave me love for reading, and I am absolutely positive it will continue to do the same for many children. The way it starts as an easy and short read and than evolves into Dark, complex, and long lilterature that is incredibly well done and convicting is awe-inspiring. If you want your kid/teen to leave the video games alone, get them to pick up the Sorcerer's Stone. For teens and adults who already treasure reading, this series is a rare and pleasant treat. This book ranks as my second favorite of the series, behind only The Deathly Hallows.

THE ORDER OF THE PHEONIX ROCKS!!!

I loved this installment of Harry Potter! I am the kind of reader that can read 800+ pages in about 4 days, so I loved the length of it! I thought the few people from Dumbledor's army refused to let Harry go to the Ministry alone! I LOVE how the kids go against Umbridge by forming a club. I was very satisfied with the battle in the end, except I didn't find it necessary to have Sirius Black die. He was one of my favorite characters, and Harry only knew him for about 2 years. I loved it when Harry has the dream of the snake and Mr. Weasley. I found that to be a very powerful moment. I think Occlumency is awesome!!! I really enjoyed reading the battle with Voldemort and Dumbledore, and I loved it when Harry got possessed by Voldemort!! That was AWESOME!!! I LOVE Fred and George!!! They are soo hilarious!!! I thought having Harry get Banned from Qudditch was pretty unnescessary also. I was sooo happy when Harry stuck up for what he believed in, and then finally proved he was telling the truth all along. Everyone says that Harry is angry a lot in this book, but wouldn't you be if people kept saying you were crazy all the time? I would reccomend this book to anyone!

I love the "Harry Potter" series, but not this book. It could have been at least 200 pages shorter, meanders around, introduces pointless characters like Grawp, and so on. The best stuff was Fred and George's antics. Don't get me wrong, it's not terrible, but it's not great either. Grade B- Age recomm: 12+ or younger mature kids.

    Highly Recommended

I recommend reading this book, if you can understand this. I don't think there really is a factor of how old you are just, if you can read it. But obviously it is a little too big, and may need more time than you think, but it is really interesting, and will keep you wanting more...

    My Favorite!

This was my favorite Harry Potter out of all seven! Of course that might be because I liked Sirius so much. Something exciting is happening all of the time! It's definently mildly violent, but every kid my age will love it!

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix: Official Review by Teenager

The fifth installment of Harry Potter was very interesting. I could not have enjoyed the STORY more but the mild language, and brief violence is absurd, due to young kids reading the first three or four. It was a dissapointment to young ones all around the world who due to these crooked edges in the circle of Harry Potter 5. With this report I believe that children eight and up are as near eligable to definately read this book. But of course you could be eight and up and yet not read this well yet and that is another matter.

    Thrilling

This was my most favorite Harry Potter book out of the first six. It was awesome and I couldn't put the book down no matter how hard I tried. Some people may think that Harry Potter is evil and they get all of their powers from Satan. Let me tell you where ever you heard that, don't trust that sorce. They are lying to you. This series doesn't mention God or Satan. They get thier magic from wands. They don't levitate or say special prayers to something to get their powers. They get their wands to do what they want by demonstarting what they are taught in class. Meaning they say a word that J. K. Rowling made up and the wand does that. The series has the plot like any other good series would have. You have the "Good" side and you have the "Bad" side. The good side has to defeat the bad side. But the bad side is slippery so it took seven books to destroy the bad side, or if it is even destroyed at all in the seventh book. So the series is perfectly all right. Let you child read them is they are over 10 (so they understand it better) and listen to waht they have to say about the book. Listen to them start laughing while they read it and moan when someone's in trouble, and rout for the good side. My advice is to go to the library and check out the whole series. Why? Your child is just going to ask you to go back and get the next book anyway. So save yourself a trip!

    A Good Book

The first four books of this series are very good and fun. But, the 5th and the 6th books have an element of sadness and darkness in them. I think it is because it is the end of a lot of things: no more Sirius, no more Dumbledore, and, if the danger continues, no more Hogwarts. This book is excellent, but it is also sort of sad because in the back of your head you keep on thinking, "I don't really know what will happen if things get worse...".

    Classic Harry Potter

I am a major Harry Potter fan! Just figured I'd get that out there. Anyway, great book. Not for people with no patience, though, it has a LOT of pages. It's really sad when Sirius dies, but I've heard it's not the last of him! Probably not a great choice for kids under 9 or 10, because it can get a little complicated. Fantastic book!

    Fantastic!

With its exceptionally well developed characters, extraordinary plot line, and easy relation to the lives of teens around the world, no one questions why Harry Potter has rapidly become the best-selling book series in the world. I am a huge fan myself, and I have to say that ORDER OF THE PHOENIX is my favorite. There are a few things that might concern parents such as the kiss between Harry and Cho, but as its not described, it's not a big worry. There is also another heart wrenching death in this book that many die-hard fans might cry over. So why does the world enjoy Harry Potter so much? There's one simple answer: it's the closest thing we have to magic.

A must read series for everyone!

This book was one of the best in the series! It had almost every genre squeezed in to it. One of the reasons that I think kids love Harry Potter so much is that they can actually relate to what the characters are going through. Harry gets older and has his first girlfriend, the pretty and popular Cho Chang. Harry has had a crush on Cho since his third year, and he has tried ever since to get her to like him. But Harry soon realizes that having Cho as his girlfriend may not be all it's cracked up to be. The plot thickens when Voldemort's rise to power means that Harry's life is full of suspense and action once again. As usual, the end of the book is where everything comes to light. Another heart-wrenching death occurs, Harry meets with Voldemort once again, and a huge secret is uncovered about Harry's past-a secret that will change Harry's destiny forever. Harry Potter is the kind of series that you can read over and over and never get bored of. It's also the kind of series that you can read all day and still crave more. A little piece of advice-have a box of tissues handy when you read the end!

Probably one of the best fiction books ever written...

Wow. Wow, wow, wow. Wow wow wow wow wow wow wow. This is a TRULY amazing book. There are some extremely dramatic tragedies, (I'm not telling what!) but hey- what would a book be like if only nice things happened? This dook does include violence, and Harry;s temper does soar out of control, but in the later books Harry laments losing his temper. This book combines comedy, tragedy, suspensefulness, fright, anger, happiness, AND sadness! This is a spectacularly inspiring book.
