    • My concerns are:
    • Inappropriate language

    Loved it

I'm surprised to see no warning about the language...there are some cuss words in this book - 4, to be exact. Anything Katie did that was negative (like shoplifting) she had to apologize for and make it right. I LOVED this book. I thought it moved quickly and completed it in a day. I could not put it down. I can see a mature 9 year old reading it and liking it, but it is going to take a certain level of maturity to "get" it. I thought the ending was simply perfect and it left me smiling and feeling warm inside.

Inspirational and Moving -- a review by Dana, age 12

Cynthia Kadohata’s ‘Kira-Kira’ is an inspirational and moving book. Katie is a young girl who looks up to her older sister, Lynn. It might be her good looks, love for animals, or smarts that seems to attract everyone’s attention. Katie’s family includes a strict mother, an easygoing father, and the odd fish, Uncle Katsuhisa. They receive many looks, for they are Japanese, and come from Iowa. Katie and Lynn aren’t exactly enthusiastic about moving to Georgia, but their parents need jobs at the Hatchery.

Lynn tells Katie that kira-kira means glittering, and they have many ways to use kira-kira. She describes that the sky is kira-kira because it’s deep, but see-through at the same time. The ocean and eyes are kira-kira for the exact same reason. Kadohata’s writing style is just like the sky and the ocean. It has deep meaning, even though at first it seems like a children’s book. I thoroughly enjoyed the character development, and the small jokes spread throughout the book. Overall, I would seriously suggest this book to people who are looking for a fictional, emotional, and moving book.

    TEARJERKER!!!

This is most likely one of the best books I've ever read (and trust me, I've read alot of books!). It is a tear jerker, that goes deep into this girl's life. You cry with her at the end. The only thing parents may not like is the slight racism against Asian people (having to work in terrible conditions, cold glances ect.) There is one mention of the parent's making love, but its played to be easy to understand. Older kids may even find this reference commical. All in all, if you want a good read, check this one out!

    Fantasic!!!

I don't see why Common Sense rated this book so low. Kira-Kira is well written, engaging and absolutely phenomenal. True, some kids may not like it, but that's just it with all books, isn't it?The Newbery books do have a reputation for being well...boring. But as the saying goes, you can't judge a book by its cover-literally. This book is fantastic if you give it a try. It teaches kids to perservere in their own lives, just as Katie does in the book. Katie learns from her mistakes and learns to live in the moment and appreciate what's happenining right here, right now. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone who's very sensitive, because the end of the book is really sad. But overall, this book is a great choice for kids who love a good read!

    The book itself was okay...

In the beginning of the story, Katie hears a drunk person talking on the phone and says s--t, but the author stretched it out a little so parents would't be offended. Katie's dad sees the letter "b" in the lady's veins, and tells Katie it stood for bad lady. Again the author is trying to hide the word b--ch. The book itself was okay. Only before buying this book for your kid, you might wanna look at the ages for this book in the cover. Hope my rewiew helps!

    Best Book EVER !

I love this book. It is my favorite, and Cynthia Kadohata is my role model. I could absolutley not get my nose out of this book. I have since been in pretty close contact with Miss Kadohata and she is an amazing person and is very, very nice. I admire her so much! Bottom line is; well, get your box of Kleenex if you plan on reading this one! Also try her other books too -- especially Weedflower, another classic!!
