Common Sense Note

Parents need to know that this interactive book first published in 1940 is a classic loved by generations. It encourages toddlers to explore the world of two children with actions like patting soft fur, smelling flowers, and looking in a mirror.

Families can talk about their senses. What do your ears do? What do your eyes do? What does your nose do? Why can't you smell as well when you have a cold? What is the softest thing you can think of? What is the scratchiest?

Common Sense Review

Reviewed By: Karyn Wellhousen

First published in 1940, PAT THE BUNNY has become a beloved classic and a best-selling children's book. The outstanding features are those that allow children to use their senses -- feeling, seeing, touching, and smelling -- as they interact with the book.

White furlike fabric is pressed between folded pages in the shape of a rabbit. A blue cloth is secured along the top edge so that it may be lifted to reveal Paul's face for a game of peek-a-boo. And a reflective material creates a mirror, allowing children to study their own facial expressions. Daddy's unshaved face feels like sandpaper, and there are even flowers that really smell. A miniature book titled Judy's Book follows the picture of Judy reading a book, and the little book about a bunny's day is charming and reinforces the value of reading.

Illustrations are simple black line drawings with yellow, turquoise, and peach colors added. Backgrounds are solid white or peach with a flower border. The effect is clean and uncluttered, making the activities the focus.

From The Book

Judy can play peek-a-boo with Paul. Now YOU play peek-a-boo with Paul.

Plot Summary:

Read it again! was the reaction of one 3-year-old boy when he was introduced to this book. Young readers can't resist the invitation to mimic the actions of Paul and Judy and happily explore each page -- touching, poking, and waving bye-bye.
