What parents need to know

Parents need to know that kids will love poring over the colorful watercolor illustrations, which are filled to overflowing with text and detail. Some poems directly ask the reader to dance or make music.

What's the story?

Put together seventeen of the noisiest poems ever written and what do you get? One of the most vociferous--and fun--poetry books you'll ever read! From the clamorous inhabitants "On the Ning Nang Nong" to the "whisity whirr" of "Our Washing Machine," this lively illustrated collection is an auditory delight.

Is it any good?

POEMS GO CLANG!: A COLLECTION OF NOISY VERSE is one of those books that sits up on its hind legs and begs to be played with. It's jabbery-blabbery, giggly-wiggly, rootin'-tootin' fun. Readers' toes will tap to "Kitchen Sink-Song" in which the "tap goes drip-drip / plip-plip-plink. Tap goes trickle at the / kitchen sink. / Fridge goes gurgle. / Pan goes slop. / Bin goes flip-flap. / Toast goes POP!" The audience of 4- to 6-year-olds, who gathered for a reading, couldn't resist jumping to their feet and tap dancing.

Playful poetry aside, the illustrations alone are enough to keep a roomful of kids busy pointing and talking about the sometimes wacky, always entertaining images. The pajama-clad boy and his pet dog wander in and out of the pages, making kids want to find him.

What families can talk about

Families can talk about poetry and what makes it fun to read aloud. Is it the rhymes? Silly sounds? Families can also try writing their own poems and sharing them with one another.
