- Excessive violence

Brilliant sequel to "Holes"
This too should get a movie adaption. Characters are colorful and Sachar's writing is vivid in detail. If you read "Holes" you HAVE to read "Small Steps."

I think this was an amazing book! Kiara was a great role model and how Armpit was trying to turn his life around was so positive! I read it with my book club run by two eleven year-olds with all eleven year olds in it. It was awesome, but for anyone under the age of ten i would advise that the parent/gaurdian flips through the book first.

Simple amazing.
I am 14 years old, and I am an avid reader. This book is the BEST book I've ever read, and I'm pretty sure it will always be. I have read this four time, and I really think that I can read it all day long. From the beginning to the end; this book was glued to my hand. I HAD to finish reading this. This book is amazing, you will enjoy it if you read it.

Small Steps
This book is one of the best books i've ever read. if you are thinking about reading this than you should read holes first. you shouldnt read this book if you are younger than 12 because they have books that have ideas about sex. children shouldnt read about that. but behind a couple little things this book is amazing. it teaches you things you need in the future.

GREAT, BUT NOTHING LIKE HOLES
This book is nothing like Holes. It is a lot different. There is a lot of curseing. Kaira is beat almost to death by her own father. Fred get stabed in the rib cage with a knife. Great book, but nothing like Holes.

Guaranteed Success Not a Match for "Holes" -- a review by Chris, age 11
After his visit at Camp Green Lake, Armpit (Theodore) returns home to a family that is very overprotective. His life seems busy with all sorts of activities and people. After a while his old friend, X-ray (Rex), offers him an opportunity to increase the money in his bank account by 600 dollars. He only needs to put $600 on the line. "Don't worry, it's guaranteed" —X-ray. So they buy tickets to the Kaira DeLeon concert. They scalp the tickets. When they have sold all but two for $135 each Armpit asks a girl to go with him. All these events lead up to one big complicated romance, which takes off into events that resemble real life and its mysteries. This book seems to have been written by a completely different author. In Holes Stanley and Zero are stuck in a pit with scorpions and then everything bad happens, but Sachar turned it around in just about five pages. However this book could have had quite the turn around in two ways, but he decided to end it with Theodore sad as can be. This portrays a romance that ended the wrong way. Sachar could have easily done something else but decided not to. That drug related content was small and had nothing to do with the core of the book. The portrayed message was direct, but made no sense. What are kids supposed to do with "take small steps if you are a criminal?†That aspect of the book could have been better. In the beginning I longed for more description, but none came. This book was a poor sequel to "Holes" but an ok book on its own. If you are a very emotional person, this book is just enough to throw you over. If you are looking for a sad ending I would recommend "Stargirl" instead.

Not a small step in the plotline of "Holes"
When I finally got my hands on this book and got down to reading it, I couldn't stop. It's a really good sequel; it carries on two characters that we barely heard about in the first book. Armpit's and X-Ray's, a.k.a. Theodore and Rex, exploits are detailed in a humourous and true way. I really liked Armpit's viewpoint of how different races were viewed, and how he himself (with a criminal history) was viewed. I silently cheered everytime a person or family formed a new opinion of Armpit. I loved how Armpit treated Ginny like his little sister, and how a relationship developed with Kathy. A good book.
