What parents need to know

Parents need to know that there's nothing to be concerned about in this picture book about a loving African-American family introducing the world to their much-loved new baby.

What's the story?

This picture book weaves words and illustrations to show a loving family introducing their new baby to life's beauty. In the beginning pages, specific sights, sounds, and tastes welcome the baby into a vibrant sensory world. Then, the loving embraces and cooing play of its family build warmth and love. Finally, filled with dreams of a magical world, the baby is lulled to sleep in the ark of its parents' arms with a prayer for a long life to explore this new world.

Is it any good?

The collage of words and illustrations in this book creates a loving, hopeful world to cradle the dreams of a new child. The author and illustrator have worked well together to create this multimedia presentation, both poetic and artistic. While the poetry presents a beautiful rainbow of unique sights, sounds, and tastes, the watercolors and cut-paper collages add a warm, loving embrace to the story.

Delicately watercolored faces painted against the more ruggedly cut backgrounds present happy, sensitive people who seem to appreciate the joys of this exciting world. Balloons bounce throughout the pages, appearing here and there in the background to underline the festive feeling of this book. WELCOME, PRECIOUS is more than a joy to read and experience. It's the perfect gift book for anyone welcoming a new baby into the world.

What families can talk about

Families can talk about their own births and early days. Families who are using this book to introduce older siblings to the idea of a new baby can talk about how they can all participate in welcoming the newest family member. What sounds, touches, and tastes will you introduce the baby to?
