Typical writing-ethic style, but the plot is absolutely grand. One part (I was surprised) very much disturbed me so that's why I gave the "Violence" concern bomb. This book'll have you reading the entire series, as I am trying to complete now.
Not sure how this rated OK for 9 yr olds, but the scene when kids are killed and they have to mop up the blood before tourists come through the White House is disturbing. NOT for 9 yr olds - maybe 14+?
It's sci-fi, but realistic. It's horrifying yet believable.
It's a society where everything is so right...so wrong.
It's a lake, pristine on the surface, yet hopelessy messed up beneath the surface.
It's a rare series where you probably should read all 7 (or 8?) books.
I admit the ending was kinda sad. But it had to happen to produce the sequels, which are all awesome. This is my favorite book right now, and I read it over a year ago.
Amazing! I love the book even though I'm a third child! ;) It's a great story and I think that the courage that some of the characters have is a great thing to read about! To any good readers that want something fun and intresting to read, READ THIS!
I love this book. I read it as a child and now as I go into my last year as an education major I am looking for ways to include it into my lessons. I love the message that if you don't think that something is right than you should try to make that change. I think that this is a great book for parents and children to read together. Encourage your children to discuss what they are reading with you and have them make real life connections. A must read in my book!
The book is full of cliff hangers and secrets that are no unlocked until the end! The story of a secret friendship and illegal kids! YOU MUST READ IT! (A Series)
This is an amazing book! Margaret Peterson Haddix is one of my favorite writers. Her books are great! Among the Hidden is a great book! It has a great story!
I love this book and teach it to my 7th graders each year. One of the main characters does die and the students become fairly upset but at the end, they talk about how much they love the book. It keeps their attention through almost all of the book and they don't want to stop reading because each chapter leaves you at a cliff hanger. It is great! I highly recommend it!
good for older tweens and up (with good comprehension)
Have read the whole series. Could be intense and suspenseful at times for younger readers. Overall, very well written and geared to encourage children to think about their rights and freedoms and what they really mean and if they are worth fighting/standing up for. Finally, it was pleasantly free of things to concern this parent (who is VERY concerned about what is in many books anymore).
i really enjoyed this book! i read all of the shadow children books! but, i think the age limit should be ten. that seems a little more reasonable! but this book was very good, and i definitely recommend it!
