Superb novel with superb messages.
Because of Winn-Dixie tells the story of India Opal Buloni, a 10-year-old girl who moves to a new town and doesn't know anybody. She is teased by the kids at church, and she has no friends. But all of that changes one day, when she is sent to a local Winn-Dixie store and finds a stray dog running around. She, much to her father's dismay, adopts the dog, and names it Winn-Dixie after the store. Winn-Dixie helps Opal make plenty of friends in this small southern town. This is a fantastic book, but some of the content may be too much for kids. Opal's mother has abandoned her, and we learn that a little girl's brother drowned. Language consists of a few utterances of "hell". We learn that Gloria and Opal's mother were alcoholics (Gloria also has a "mistake tree" that has beer bottles hanging from it). However, the book has wonderful messages of tolerance and friendship. This is a great book for kids 8 and older.

Beautifully written, moving story. A quick read.
This was a lovely story with a lot of well-written imagery that kids can understand. The story has some sad issues: a mother that has left and another minor characters brother has drowned, but I think the book deals with them in a manner that children can understand and empathize. The main character is a young girl who learns, through the loyalty of her dog, that life is full of surprises and we grow through our experiences. I read this story with my 7 year-old and we were able to talk about these issues together. The chapters are short and make for perfect "bedtime" reading.

This Amazing book ....
This was an amazing book it tells the story of a girl by the name of Opal who has really no one to talk to but when Winn-Dixie comes into her life she starts to make friends and it was all because of Winn-Dixie.At the end of the book she says to her self she doesnt care about her mom as much as she did I loved that I will never forget Winn-Dixie and how good this book was .They say hell and retard and they do some things that might distribute others but if you 10+ you will love this book and it makes you think about life .

I loved the book "Because of Winn-Dixie". It is a amazing book, about this one girl who finds true friends that become family, and finds a amazing dog that changes her whole life. It really taught me a lot of things, like trust and friendship. It also may help you too.

Because It's a Great Book!
I loved this book! Very minor refferences to violence or meloncholic happenings, yet still I had a little cry by the end of it. That's probably why it's a Newbury winner since in one simple way, it's beautiful literature.

Quite Good
I like this book a lot. The characters are very likable and believable. However, I do think this book is quite over-hyped. That's not to say it is a bad story, but it is not one of the best books ever or the most poignant book ever or anything like that. I would definitely recommend it.

Very, very good book!
I love this book! I was really sad when I was done reading it. It's about a girl who finds a dog in the supermarket and names him Winn-Dixie. He helps her find alot of friends but theres a whole other point to the story. You have to read it!
