it was the first actual series i read, i read it when i was 8 but finished when i was 10 for the series. The first book hooked onto me, and i didn't want the series to end. I give this book like 10/5 stars.. MATT YOU ARE WAYYY OFF ON THE STARS

Not bad
Darren Shan is not a perfect hero. He is a very confused young man who just wants to do the right thing. He constantly second guesses his decisions and tries to see both sides of every conflict. An enjoyable journey, but not appropriate for younger children.

Kids wouldn't understand, vocabulary need upgraded
Good for any age, I said 10+ because I don't think younger kids would understand the story because they wouldn't know what some of the words meant. And there is some swearing, but age ten, there's kids in public schools cussing anyways. Ten is the perfect age to teach your kids that there is such thing as words that shouldn't be used, and you should enforce it by playing by their rules. If they can't cuss, you shouldn't either. Sure, you're showing them that you have control over them by saying "I'm an adult. I can do it." But that will make them feel like it's the cool thing to do, and that it's alright to do it, because you ARE their role models. :)

I read it 10 times
After reading the second book, The Vampire's Assistant, for a school project, I went back and read the first book. The first and second were so good, I had to read the rest of the series. All of the books were good, excecpt for the last half of the 12 book. It has a horrible ending.

an entertaining read for tweens that can be hard to put down but its nothing more than that
an entertaining read for the pre-teens but it is not very well written if you have read more intricate stories by more talented authors. but overall it is a fun weekend read for tweens, but the plot is thin and the characters are cliched.

Great series
First things first, this a review for the series not the first book. This series is amazing and despite everything i read about lack of plot and other such comments the plot is amazingly in-depth and shouldnt be sold short. Violence grows through the series but shouldnt be a big problem. And FYI the first three books are being made into a movie

An exciting read
Extremely violent, but still a fascinating story!! The rest of the books in the series aren't that good, however.

This series about a boy who becomes a vampire through a series of events is a very interesting read for older kids. The upcoming movie seems only okay.

Oh dude! I'm not even kidding on how awesome this series is, there are 12 books and the are so many twists and turns no way could put this book down. Darren has so many flaws which we all do and it's easy to see his struggles throughout the books

Can't Put It Down.
Cirque Du Freak & The Rest Of the Series are probably the most amazing things. I first picked up Cirque Du Freak when I was very little. After that, I couldn't stop. I have only read the series once through, though. I have made friends read it and they have all loved it. I reccomend this series for anyone.

My IQ lowered reading this
I don't know why they count this as young adult. Anyone over thirteen would have to be prepared to die after reading this. It was written so terribly it was pathetic, and while a seven year old might find it scary, anybody much older wouldn't. There are a few swearwords, some people do some weird thing; they're 'freaks' after all, and nothing else, really. I can't begin to recommend this book. It was so horrible!

Addicting Ripoff
For the first 11 1/2 books, It was SO good, I couldnt stop reading, but the series ending turns out the worst I could possably think of, so if you're like me, you'll love it, then read the last book, then hate it. It, like, kills all the other book in fifty pages!!!

Very good book
This is one of my favorite book series. The plot is well written, and keeps your eyes glued to the pages. I never want to go to sleep when i'm reading this book before i go to bed. This series is perfect for teens and maybe some advanced readers that are children.

i tried getting into HP and SOUE, but i just couldn't, then i found this book and said i'll give it a try. i didn't read it until like a month later, and when i did, i was addicted. Darren Shan is my idol(i know it sounds retarded but he is)and i want to be as well as a writer as he his. Nothing can ever top Darren Shan's books!
