I can't even get into this book, I hate it actually. I don't think there is a good plot, my child was trying to read it for a book report and she excells in all of her classes so it wasn't too hard, so I decided to try it. The plot of this book is very difficult to follow. Nothing is explained at all. I do like the message that is in this book, but I don't like the plot at all.
Gathering Blue was an interresting novel, but a great read. This science fiction story is not one of you general reads, but it is a refreshing educational book, (ex: you should be greatful of the world that we live in) with many question and finally, unlocked answers. Strange but amazing read!
This book was very thought-provoking, exploring the possibility of a downfall of civilization, rather than a future full of amazing technologies. Younger kids might find the ending disappointing, as we never really find out what happens. However, older children should recognize that the ending was a stroke of genius, leaving the reader to figure out what happens on their own.
Oddly enough, even though Gathering Blue was more violent then The Giver, it seemed less so. This violence was more human then in the Giver. It's a wonderfull sequal showing a compleate contrast to the 1st book.
My daughter had to read this book in fifth grade. She labored through it, because of the content. Abandonment, patrimony, idol worship and one's usefulness in society, --if you were lame, you were an outcast,--all were dominant themes. I read the book, and I think it is more appropriate for 15 year olds and up. You need to take into account the developmental stage your child is going through before recommending it.
My mother/daughter book club just finished reading this book. It was an interesting sci-fi/fantasy book that got us to thinking about what the world might be like in the future if we don't take care of it now. It portrays a strong female character who despite her diminished role in her society, is able to face the challenges ahead of her when her mother dies. I'd recommend this book for kids 10 and up. It might be too far out for younger kids.

I'm 12 and I absolutely loved this book. It was interesting, mysterious, and heartrending. Not as good as The Giver in that the plot wasn't developed as fully, but still a very good read and I would recommend it to anybody who is mature enough to follow the plot and understand its meaning.
