What Parents Need to Know
Parents need to know that Huda F Are You? is a graphic novel by Huda Fahmy, telling a fictionalized story of growing up as an Egyptian American Muslim in Dearborn, Michigan. Huda wants to fit in at school but wants her own identity as well. She's bullied by anti-Muslim kids and teachers. The title of the book evokes the expression "Who the 'f--k' are you?" but there's no swearing in the story. White kids bully Huda and say she's a terrorist. There's only the tiniest hint of romance: Huda tells a boy she's romantically interested in him.

What's the Story?
As HUDA F ARE YOU? opens, first-year high school student Huda F. finds that she's no longer the only Muslim in her class, that she's not "the hijabi girl" any more. If she looks like everybody else, how can she be special anymore? She makes a lot of new friends, but she's still unhappy. When Huda starts getting C-minuses on her papers, she knows something's truly wrong.
Is It Any Good?
There are more comics now about the lives of Muslims, and this funny, wise, and big-hearted graphic novel is one of the best. Huda F Are You? tells a story of aspiration and assimilation, as a teen girl tries to figure out just who she's supposed to be. The art in Huda F is functional at best, but its expressiveness delivers the narrative's message loud and clear. Fahmy has an ear for funny dialogue and an eye for absurd situations. It's impossible not to root for her as she honestly explores American culture and Middle Eastern tradition.
