The book that caused me to stop calling The Secret Garden my favorite book of all time.

This is probably one of the greatest stories you'll ever come to know (well, if you do get to know it), and one of the saddest too, if you really understand it. The main character is Celeste Marconi, who has a great life with her family and friends in Valparaíso, Chile. Then her country is taken over, and everything in her life changes. For her own safety, Celeste is sent to her aunt in America, but having to adjust to a new life and all that has happened, Celeste wonders if she'll ever be able to go back home. A very emotional and powerful novel for all.

I Lived on Butterfly Hill

This is a moving story about a Chilean girl's life in a time of solidarity. It truly touched me and is a book that I will always remember. Even after reading it a second time, the beautiful messages of this book as well as the lovely, moving, poetic writing style still enrapture me. Celeste starts as an bright young girl torn from her joyous, peaceful life in Valparaiso to live as an exile in Maine, USA, to escape the dangers of Augusto Pinochet's dictatorship. Throughout the course of the book, she transforms into a confident, intelligent, and courageous young woman who rescues her father, builds a traveling library for Valparaiso, and is determined to rebuild her country. It is a book for all of those who would like to learn more about the world, who want to read a novel narrated by a relatable, strong, and compassionate heroine, or who simply want to be enthralled by a good story. It is one of those books that you reread over and over because it will make you think, laugh, cry, and want to make a difference.
