Too Much Sexual Behavior- Iffy for 10-Year-Olds
I thought it was a good book. But I think the sexual behavior was a bit much. I did not think that was necessary. I do not think I would let my 10 year-old sister read this because of that one part.

Perfect for 5th grade and up
I loved it! This was an inspiring book. I cried a lot, but in a good way. Sure there was a little bad language but it's not clear.

Sad, But Great
I can honestly see why this is a Newberry award winner. It has a beautiful plot and sends a positive message: life is glittering. It has a sad ending, but it is overall a great book.

Love It!
I loved this book, and it's messages. Being a 25% Japanese myself, I love books about Japan and it's people. Be warned, if you read this book, YOU WILL CRY!

This is NOT 'another Newbery book few kids will want to read'. Shame on you, Commonsense! D:
I completely disagree with Common Sense on this one. I think this is one of the few Newbery book kids WOULD want to read. I do agree the Newbery award tends to make very boring picks, but that's not true of Kira-Kira. Yes, it's sad, it's VERY sad, but it's touching, and it's very well written. I read it when I was in fifth, maybe fourth, grade and I loved it. My sister actually just did a book report on it today. o.o It has its inappropriate moments, but I don't think younger readers will really understand what's going on at those times (such as the part about the parents... that'd go over most kids' heads).

Cynthia Kadohata's heartbreaking Newbery Medal book - Kira-kira
Kira-kira is a well-written, emotional book about a family's struggle through poverty, discrimination, and staying together. Katie, the main character, is taught by her older sister, Lynn (or Lynnie) that everything in the world, from the sky to tissues to the sparkle in one's eye, is kira-kira (glittering). She learns to cherish life and to not let things like poverty or illness keep you from enjoying every moment of it. When Lynn falls terminally ill, Katie is lonely and heartbroken, for Lynn is not only her older sister, but her role-model and best friend as well. Lynn is the one who keeps the Takeshima family together in these hard times, and the one who makes them appreciate all they have. Katie is heartbroken as the family falls apart after Lynn's tragic death, but must use her sister's teachings to set the family back together. This is a heart-wrenching tale of friendship, love, and family, as well as death, discrimination and poverty. It is a wonderful book that will touch a reader's heart and I highly recommend it. It is a wonderful book that brought me to tears.

What a beautiful book!
I read this book -out of my own will, mind you- and loved it. I was 8 years old and still working through my library's small collection of childrens fiction. It's a fantastic book! It carries emotion, humor, love, and so many indescribable emotions. In short, it's beautiful. Everyone should read it.
