I was amazed at how amuch i enjoyed this book. At first, it hought that this would be just another boring book that my teacher was forcing my classmates and i to read but as we went farther along in the book, it became more exciting. I was constantly wanting to read that book but i didnt have a copy of it. I was in tears at the end of the book not because the ending was sad or depressing, just simply because the book was over. I would reccomend thiis to all children ages 11+ there was just a little bit of violence but it was because Percy Jackson ( manin character) had to protect himself from the many monster that dared to attack him. I hope that you,the person reading my review, will read the book and the whole series if you already haven't. Thank you for taking the time to go through this legnthy review and i hope you get to enjoy this book as I did. :)
I love the book series. It's nice to see how Percy and his friends grow up and have diffrent crazy experiances. A must-read for anyone who enjoys Harry Potter
I really enjoyed this series, one of my all-time favorites. The Lightning Thief encouraged me to learn more about Greek mythology, as I became very interested in it after reading the book. Many children can relate to Percy Jackson, who has ADHD and dyslexia. However, while he thought these were problems, in the demigod world, these learning disabilities are actually his greatest gifts. ADHD, as Annabeth says "are your battlefield reflexes. They will keep you alive in a fight." And, Percy's dyslexia means his brain is "hard-wired for Ancient Greek." This book includes violence, but it's not too bad, and not gory. Peopl 9 and up will all enjoy traveling to this epid, magnificent world within our world that Mr. Riordan has created from a bedtime story, with many laughs along the way.
not innapropriate, just hard to read, best for experienced readers
its a good book. it might be a little hard for kids to read if their 9 or maybe 10. its not very innapropriate either.yes, there IS fantasy violence but its not very realistic, mostly heroes killing monsters with swords and knives. another good thing is so far they havent made a bunch of junk like percy jackson legoes, action figures, videogames(except one) or any lame miniseries on TV
i was a little reluctant to read it during the first chapter, but after that it got better and better to the point where i was begging my mom to get the rest of the books! the movie was awful compared to this!
This was a fun book to read :) Not only did I connect very well to the main character, Percy, and his friend Annabeth, but I really learned a lot about Greek mythology. I thought it was a fascinating plot, very refreshing from the recently cliche Vampire romances coming out since Twilight (by the way, am I the only one who's annoyed at the amount of vampire novels released since the Twilight movies?).
Great main character and supporting character, nice Greek mythology references, and an intriguing, refreshing plot add up to a high four stars for Rick Riordan's The Lightning Thief.
I'd recommend this book to any child who loves fantasy, so long as they can distinguish reality from fiction, and that's not a problem for most kids. :) I bought it!
Percy Jackson is my favorite book series.I've read all the books in the series including the Demigod Files. Percy Jackson's humor is more suited to tweens but can be read by anyone. Percy Jackson will get kids interested in Greek mythology and teach them about them. The books are long though so they not suited for anyone with a reading level below 4.

I really loved this book. I read it for Battle of the Books, and it is great for any age. It is also educational because it teaches a lot about greek mythology. Percy the main character is thrown into a whirlwind adventure that is keeping you on the edge of your seat the entire time. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!! (:
This book is GREAT!!!!!!!!!! It has action at every turn, betrayal from unexpected people, friendship, and trust. It has amazing characters that are true to themselves. There are different monsters in every chapter, which means more challenges. Rick Riordan has an amazing imagination, and he is a really talented author. The Lightning Thief is really an amazing, funny, kid friendly book, that should and will be read for years, maybe even decades. And the movies are going to be amazing also.
After reading the other reviews I was a bit surprised. I get the parents that did have some concerns about how the demigods were conceived and that whole issue, but I think that some people blew it a bit out of proportion. Yes, a lot of the children in the story were conceived from affairs but it is by no means a sexual or inappropriate book, nor does it revolve around sexual content. Actually, while I was reading it around age 13, I don't think that I focused at all on how the kids came to be, I just loved the story and glazed right over that. It's more of an after-thought, really. I think that as long as your child is mature enough to understand the inapproproate nature of infidelity, they'll be okay, but it might be a good time to have a discussion with them on the topic. I read it long after knowing that infidelity is totally wrong and not okay under any circumstances. don't think that they way he mentions it is dirty or anything, though. However, I must admit that I'm a bit of a fraidy-cat, and there were a few moments where I was a bit scared. I put 10 & Up because I think that's the age that kids will really start to understand the book and actually like it, not because I think they'd be scarred for life if they read it earlier. It depends on the maturity level of the people reading it. When I read it I never once worried about whether it was appropraite or not, and I'm pretty careful about that and have put down/thrown away many books before. The bottom line: Know your kid. If you're worried about it, just wait a bit, but the themes and messages behind it aren't sexual or inappropriate at all in my personal opinion.
P.S. If anything, I would worry more about your kids going and looking up Greek Myths after reading it because Riordan's story is superb and might inspire kids to go look up more mythology to further their understanding. Or they might look it up just because they think the stories are cool. Either way, that's where the inappropriate or sexual stuff is liable to pop up.
I loved it, everything about it was great, so great that I am doing my book report on it. I loved the adventure and intensity of the book so much, that I could not put it down. I love learning about Greek mythology now. I simply cannot get enough of it, and it also gives a positive influence to all readers. To never give up, no matter what, and the role models also send a good influence.
