Why We Rated This on for Ages 9 and Up

What to watch out for

  • Messages:

The bad guy in this story makes and uses slaves. His goal is to control the known world (Pangaea) through fast-food manipulation of the population. It's indicated that he became evil because of a horrid childhood filled with teasing, bullying, and name-calling while adults stood by smirking and watching. Stone Rabbit himself does quite a bit of name-calling. While Stone Rabbit is the main character, he doesn't seem heroic or admirable in any particular way, with the exception of letting prisoners out of their cages.
  • Violence:

There is much banging, hitting, whacking, and bonking throughout the story. Time travel begins and ends with Stone Rabbit getting hit in the head. Stone Rabbit is part of a fight in which he gets kicked, his ears pulled, a tooth gets knocked out, and he gets squarely punched in the face. Throughout the story, there are menacing creatures with huge teeth attempting to eat Stone Rabbit. He gets whacked by tails, gulped by pterodactyls, dropped from the sky, and bonked on the head by a giant boxing glove.
  • Sex:

    Not an issue.
  • Language:

Lots of name-calling: "Are you some kind of freak?" "What does it feel like to be so dumb?" "Look, duncecap...." "Where's your laughter now, longears?" "Nice costume, doofus." "Crudmonekys" is the catchphrase of the main character.

  • Consumerism:

The idea that a fast-food empire could control people and turn them into slaves of habit and need.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

    Not an issue.

What Parents Need to Know

About Stone Rabbit #1: BC Mambo

Parents need to know that this graphic novel may intrigue certain kids for the action, visuals, and short length (96 pages), but there's little substance -- in character or storyline -- to engage kids in any meaningful conversation. There's much name-calling and physicality throughout the book. This is the first book in a new series, and the second book was concurrently published.

    It Was Okay...........

This book has a so-so idea supported by a very flimsy plot. There are chuckles every now and then, but not enough. The art work is good enough, but the author should improve on its plot.
