This book has really awful things happening in it. Some very disturbing stuff happens for the younger student. (Two people die ... one struck by lightening and the other accidently murdered) (the main character's brother is very insensitive about death and mock the deseased as well as sprays paint in the main character's eyes and almost blinds him at the age of 5) I really don't recomend it but if you were to read it, it would be for a much more mature group.
I personally think that this was a really good book. We had to read it over the summer for school and I thought I was going to hate it. I'm not even into soccer or anything that they talked about, and I still couldn't wait until I finished it so I could figure out all of the mysteries.
This book is phenomenal. It is thought-provoking and inspirational. It serves as a great 'dress rehearsal' for tweens and teens as they will face many of these issues during their lives [athletes and their behavior, friendship, family secrets, bullying, assertiveness]. I am considering using this as a book for 7th graders to read, experience, and discuss in September. [I needed to have patience to get past the first 30 pages or so. After that, I stayed up all night reading it!]
i think this book isnt meant for kids age 9-16 teen i've been reading it with my 11 year old because school has him reading it it isnt good for his age and if i would of know before hand i would of not let him even start reading this book not meant for a kids his age readit 1st as a parent and then deside if it ok for a younger kids to read i as a mother think not for mine
Parents need to now that a minor character in the book is struck dead by lightning. There are also a few brawls leading to a death. There is some minor language such as "hell" and "piss" but it is infrequent.
I really enjoyed this book ,i was so into it!. Beacause when i was reading the book i could just imagine how paul felt when everybody thought he was blind. It gets a little confusing though. In overall i give it an
A+++!!
100%!!
This book was a great mystery to solve. At first it stars with a 'zombie'. I had to read this book in school, I couldn't stop reading it so I finished before any of my friends did! You should try to read this book, it gives some great facts about citrus groves at Florida.
The book begins with Paul the main chracter moving to Florida with his mom. He has a brother, Erik, and his father that were already at the new house at Florida. After that, the weird flashbaacks start going on.
Honestly i didnt like the book but my daughter did so im doing this review for her because she loved the book and said that it should b for people 11 and up before they miss the chance!!! I mean the book was ok i just didnt lik the way the editor set it up but there were also things in there that the book could have gone without to make it rlly good...hope u liked the book 2
As a middle school Language Arts teacher, I am always trying to find a great book for my students to read. A fellow reading teacher suggested that I read the book and I LOVED it! I could not stop reading. The main character, Paul Fisher, is a complex young man. The social issues he faces are those faced by adolescent boys and girls. Many raters have discussed the violence in the book; however, I do not think that the violence is too intense for middle school students. Try it! I know you will like it!
I have read this book in school and it is so interesting you cant stop! The most surprises are stuffed in the end, so you'll have something to look forward to. It seemes kind of fiction-ish, but it has alot of truth inside it. You learn lessons and how to treat people. As I have said, I LOVE this book.
I'm a children's librarian and when I need to recommend a book to boys in sixth grade and up, this is the first book I turn to.
We did a father/son book discussion and the dad's enjoyed this book as much or better than their children.
Mean kids are a fact of life in school (look at the headlines). I can't say enough about this book... it's dead-on for YA's -- 6 grade + -- where this age group is learning to solve problems on their own. It celebrates different cultures. It has fascinating material about the citrus industry in Florida and I can attest to the fact that it has parents and kids talking together! I highly recommend it. Please don't judge this book without reading it!
