Parents need to know that although this novel is targeted to Middle-Schoolers,it's pushes the limit for the target reader. This novel is Dark,Complex and Entertaining, but it's simpley too violent for young kids. There's lot's of dark violence, some of it disturbing, which includes beatings,off-screen murder, and a flashback scene where the main character is spray painted in his eyes. However their's very little sex, profanity,or drinking and drug use.The bottom line is this novel is a better bet for older kids.
Messages:Positive 1/5 Although some lessons are learned, there are some dark messages and themes in this novel which include Bullying,Murder, and racial themes, include mexicans using violence for payback.
Role Models:Positive 1/5 Although Paul seems like a good kid at the beginning,he soon changes into a troublemaker,he does this to change himself, but the new him is actually worse,Paul's brother is definitely no role model, and Paul's parents aren't the most supportive parents in the world. The kid's from tangerine have no redeeming qualities, despite they're openess to Paul.
Violence:4/5 There are two murders in the book, one involving a minor character getting struck by lighting, described in great detail, and a major character getting killed by another character in an unknown act of violence. There's bullying, beatings, and plenty of arguing, there are also some moments of intense peril, including a crumbling sinkhole, and the main character almost freezing to death. And in one disturbing moment the main character at the age of five is spray painted in the eyes by his brother, very graphic and cruel.
Sex:1/5 Some mild flirting and talk about dating.
Language:2/5 Occasional use of "H*ll" and "a**".We also hear insults like "Nerd","Loser","Catfish"(which is used to describe one character),and "Mars".
Consumerism:2/5 Coco-Cola is mentioned several times(mostly describing Paul's glasses),name dropping also includes 7-11,McDonalds,CNN,and Volvo.
Drinking,Drugs, and Smoking:0/5 The beginning part of the novel describes Paul's mom crushing the white butt of a Cigarette, that might show viewers that Paul's Mom is a smoker, though that's the only part that shows it.
Is it any Good:TANGERINE is a debut novel from Edward Bloor, and thankfully he does an amazing job with characters and plot in this novel.Although Paul is no hero,we still cheer for him as he play's soccer, which show's readers that they care for Paul. And in some ways he does some admirable things like stand up to his mean brother, and save a bunch of kids from a sinkhole.Other characters are also very well-made,though we could have learned more about Paul's parents, instead they're more of a third wheel in a situation.
However the best part about Tangerine is it's story,it starts out simple, but then it's very complex, but also very dark(this could disturb young readers.).We learn more of a backstory with each character, like what Paul's brother Erik was like when he was younger, the family members of the kids from Tangerine Middle School, and most importantly what caused Paul to have his Coke-Bottle sized glasses.Tangerine isn't for the faint of heart, but those who can handle will see more from Edward Bloor, has he has an excellent future in books.
