Better choices available
I found this book at the thrift store along with the second in the series. The first book is just okay. While not graphic, there are a lot of negative things covered, which I would not recommend for younger teens. As the series progresses, the writing just becomes garbage. Not only is it boring, the main character is sexually trafficked by her brother to pay for his drugs. She is later sexually abused by a dark fairy king. Not a positive message. I would say that there are many far more engaging books and series for teens to read. Marr's writing style is not very noteworthy to begin with and her subject matter just makes this whole series forgettable.

good for tweens and teens
I loved this book because of the strong message it gives that though one cannot change who they are or what they are destined to become, one can change their outlook and become accountable for their lot in life with great optimism. I really think the book is a fun, cool read for teens.

Totally amazing book, didn't want to put it down
Great book for any Fairy enthuasist or magical creature type book. Have a mature 12yo and would not mind her reading it.
