Media surveys are a great way to kick off your media education program. Distribute the parent media survey to better understand your parent community’s knowledge, attitudes, and concerns about their kids’ media lives. Conducting this survey before offering media education to parents will let you know which topics matter most to parents, and will ensure your education efforts are relevant and well-received.
Distribute the student media survey to learn how your students use media, and how this might be different from what they’re parents think! The survey is designed for students in 5th grade and older. Give the student survey to your whole school or to just a few grades. Ideally the surveys should be conducted at the start of your program so that the results can be shared at a parent education event or incorporated into early communications to parents.
The surveys take approximately 10 minutes to complete. Responses should be collected anonymously to ensure honest responses and greater participation. You can distribute the survey in print and collate the responses manually, or you may choose to set up an online survey to make survey collation easier. We recommend using Survey Monkey, a free, online survey service that makes it easy to create and manage an online survey for your parent community.
