What’s the Story?

Reviewed by Jinny Gudmundsen

The 3RD GRADE MATH book/software for the LeapPad or Quantum Pad Learning System provides an interactive way to review basic math concepts including place value, comparing and ordering whole numbers, adding and subtracting decimal numbers including money, fractions, the multiplication tables, multi-digit multiplication, division with remainders, measurement, geometry, probability, graphing, time, estimating and rounding numbers. This 24-page math book reviews concepts and offers practice and games to reinforce them. The book/software teaches a concept by breaking it down into small stages or "steps." Students walk through the multiple-step examples by using a stylus to push on each labeled step in sequence; after learning by example, the interactive book requests the student to practice using the concept by playing a "game."

Is It Any Good?

3rd Grade Math excels in making core math instruction interesting. It's more fun than workbooks because it is interactive: A voice talks to you; there is music; and most importantly, much of the audio is humorous or at least hip-sounding. Sprinkled throughout are real-life anecdotes about how people use math.

Unlike workbooks, where students work on their own to answer a series of similar problems and then have to wait to have their work corrected, this book offers immediate feedback. If the player has answered incorrectly, the book usually offers a method of checking to see where in the process a mistake was made. It's best for students who need step-by-step instruction of core math concepts.
