What’s the Story?

Reviewed by Jinny Gudmundsen

In BARBIE AS RAPUNZEL CD-ROM, Barbie plays the part of Rapunzel after she has been united with her Prince Stefan. An evil witch casts a spell on Rapunzel and Stefan that turns Stefan to stone and strips their castle of all its glory. To break the spell, Rapunzel seeks the players' help in restoring the castle and finding all the jewels on Prince Stefan's crown.

The focus of this adventure is for kids to use their creative talents to redecorate the castle. As players move through six areas of the now gloomy castle, they use special magic tools found in Rapunzel's Magic Paint Box. The tools can add color and texture to items and the Living Stickers add animated stickers. In addition to decorating specific items in each room of the castle, there are also six larger creativity projects, including designing a mosaic for the grand foyer and creating the two thrones for the ballroom.

Is It Any Good?

This is a refreshing change of pace in the traditional fairy tale genre. Instead of Rapunzel being rescued by a prince, in this software, Rapunzel does the rescuing.

With this software, girls become interior designers. While players are rarely allowed to start from scratch, they can decorate items by scrolling through different design themes until they find one that appeals to their sense of style. Kids will have fun making things look pretty. The creativity projects are unusual and involve multiple steps.
