Why We Rated This on for Ages 8 and Up

The good stuff

  • Educational value:

This game demands pysical activity and even features a workout mode.
  • Messages:

What to watch out for

  • Violence & scariness:

  • Language:

No swearing, but some of the songs have sexy lyrics.
  • Consumerism:

It's worth noting that there is special equipment needed, and this is part of a franchise of games. Plus, some of the songs feature actual videos (and their performers), which could encourage your kids to buy the music.

What Parents Need to Know

This review of DDR Max 2 was written by Kate Pavao

Parents need to know that this title not only gets kids off the couch, but it's a social game that may be best enjoyed when played with friends or families. There is a workout mode that keeps tracks of calories burned -- so parents, don't be shy about taking your turn! This title is appropriate for all ages, though children under 8 may lack the coordination, or the size, to work the large dance pad.

More on DDR Max 2

What’s the Story?

This particular version of the game features over 85 dance and disco songs from Dirty Vegas, Kylie Minogue, even KC and the Sunshine Band. While a portion of the song plays, videos or cheesy animation shows in the background, similar to karaoke videos (unless you're in the beginner level; then you are given an animated dancer to mirror instead). While you dance, a strange voice will encourage you ("You are not an ordinary fellow!") or perhaps admonish you by asking if you have a cold.

Basically, Dance Dance Revolution works like this: You choose your song, then use your feet on the gigantic dance pad to mimic the pattern of arrows you see on the screen.

Is It Any Good?

You can play DDR Max 2 alone, but it may be best enjoyed with friends and family. You'll be amazed at the fun you have laughing at yourself and each other, plus it may help kids (and shy adults) break free from some of their silly self-consciousness about dancing in public. Word to the wise: Start off with the "Lesson Mode." This will help your precision, and it will also teach you to look like you are actually dancing, instead of just stomping out of control all over the living room.

If you are considering using this as a fitness tool, there is a "Workout Mode" that will keep track of calories burned. You can set your own fitness goal (such as a specified workout time), and can save your results in a workout diary. The ignition dance pad is sold separately ($99.99 on Amazon), and you'll need two of them if you want to play against friends simultaneously (or dance on two pads yourself).

    Keeps kids active

Is your kid constantly click click clicking on the couch with the remote control? This game gets kids MOVING! Its a dance simulated game, that most kids find very fun. It might be harder for the little ones, but they have a fun time enjoying the music, and how THEY control the game with their body. If there were more simulated exercising games like this, i would buy them defenitly. It was a great game, and I love it as a kid, and all my friends love it 2.

    Be a DanceDanceRevolutionary!

I love this game. The pads can be expensive, but the prices are coming down. Now an Ignition pad is only about $80. At least it gets you up off of the couch! I would actually recomend getting DDR:Extreme 2, which has better song selection and more dance modes. The online feature is being removed on sept. 12, so don't look forward to that.
