The definition of a great RPG

Oblivion is a great RPG hands down. The controls are incredibly easy to use, and even if you step away from the game for a little while, it is still incredibly easy to pick back up and never miss a step. The game is a great mix of quality AND quanity. I have spent almost 130 hours of gameplay doing the side missions and exploring the world, but still have not seen it all, discovered it all or beaten it all. The mainline story quests can be beaten within 20 hours, but the side missions is where the game's strength really lies. Each side mission is totally unique and in doing so, allows for a deeper story to be told. It does have violence against other human and human like characters as well as a whole host of otherworldly baddies, but it is not glorified or the focus of the game. I would recommend at least 16, but you could delve maybe to 14 or 15 if you have a child that is more mature or one that you can have a quality discussion with them. This is the standard that all RPGs should meet.

Great for teens 14 and up

My husband is a big gamer and is always spending his money on new games and all these things I have never heard of before. One day I saw him playing a game that was beatiful and had amazing graphics. I asked him what he was playing and he said Oblivion. I watched him play it and their was miner blood and some iffy things like you can walk into a house and steal a banana or somethin. But in the game their are punishments if you steal or murder. Like people will not trust you anymore or you can even go to jail. The violince is not very bad I was surprised it was not rated T for teen. Before long my two kids were dying to play it. I let my older kid John who is now 15 play it. I didint let my younger boy play because of the violence. This game is amazingly beatiful and for the violence it is not bad except for a little blood. And the only other thing is that someone can drink ale or something and you can start feeling the affects like fatigue or it can even heal yourself.

    great game

this game is a very good choice for someone in early teens and up. great fantasy environment with lots of different experiences to go through where you can become the a hero of the entire game. some people think that the "negative" actions that you can do in the game will influence other people to mimic what they do in the game. i you feel that is the case then u r crazy and dont need to play the game. its all fiction and nothing is real so dont ever think u r experienceing anything from the game and have to act on it. again if u feel the events inside this game r real then u should never even look at a gaming platform. but all in all this is a very good game

Set aside a LOT of time!

Love this game, got to level 33 and pretty much did everything I could do! I wouldn't recommend for children under 10-13 due to some mature content like drinking, killing and some of the story lines.

    Best Game Ever. Period.

Encourages autonomy, careful planning, ability to read a map, ability to follow instructions, and interpersonal skills. The havoc phsycis engine makes things act like they do in the real world. It's very tame. Younger kids are not going to understand the sex jokes (if they manage to find them, there are only a couple of missions), kids don't know what ale is, or if they do, they no its a no-go in real life. People. Stop over sheltering your children--they see and hear stuff like this at school.

    Spectacular Role-Playing Game

I have never seen a game quite like this. You can do almost anything. Doing bad things have negative affects, such as going to jail, but it is also quite easy to get away with things. This game depends on your child. It should not have been rated M, I believe that was only for it's complicated gameplay. You should know your child before letting them play this. If they will be a good guy, then this can be a very fun game. But there are also many kids who will just run around slaughtering villagers and stealing things left and right. If this is the case, the huge range of actions you can take in this game would not be suitable for your child. There is an option to drink, but this will have negative status effects. There are blood and corpses shown, but if you are good, it will mostly be corpses of creatures and not people. Still, they can be rather nasty, so this game is not for the very squeamish. This game has absolutely amazing graphics, and has a huge land to explore. You can follow the quest line or just wander off on your own and go absolutely anywhere. You can ride horses and even a unicorn! It is very easy to get lost in this game, meaning both in game and out. I have been so sucked in that hours and hours will go by without me realizing. Don't be surprised when every time you have to quit you feel as if you haven't gotten anything done. I defenitly reccoment this game to any mature player. It is by far one of the best games made yet, and I hope that future games will continue upon which "Oblivion" has built.

    Superb!

This is an excellent game for adults as well as teenagers. My child bought this game and loved it and I sneak in a few hours a week too. As another reviewer said, it does teach children to make important decisions like whether or not to drink alchohol or to do drugs. The violence is a bit iffy, but if you think your child can handle it, this will be a great game for them

    AMAZING!

Oblivion is a beautiful creation. It might be a little too much for younger kids, but I know that my 8 and 9 year olds very much enjoy sitting and watching me play. The game gives you the option to steal or kill, but there are consequences in the game. It's a good excuse to talk about social behavior with your middle-aged kids.

Great but not for 4 yearolds :) Seriously fav and must have game

This is the best game i have played! It is an RPG yes but it isn't that bad. Violence: For weopons you can slice someone down with a sword, chop some on down with an axe or hit somone with an arrow or fists. No w that may sound bad but hardly any blood. When i say slice and chop i don't mean that litrally. Some red blood will go on the wall and ground if you hit them. (I had to go to jail for a mission so i hit a guy in the face :) Magic: you can make peopl have a weakness to shock, frost, fire or poison. (and you can shoot spells what actually do the damage but no blood.) Some ingrediants like a dardra heart look like a heart but arnt bloody. There are skeletons you fight (they are evil) but somewhere the forst time i played it (so i cant remember where) there was a skeleton of a child lying in it. (this is the closest to a child you can get in this game) Language: Da*n, wor and bas can be heard. You may not belive it but it suits the time they are saying it. Sex: Some dialouge in books, a mission (if your a male a women want to have 'fun' with you, if your a women another women asks you if you want to join their gang which is a thives gang no sexual stuff there) At the start if you choose a Dark Elf female your opposite cellmate will have some nice dialouge of hoping the guards will put you in his cell and if your a male dark elf, he hopes when they let him out he will 'take care' of your mother. Drugs: You can take alchohol (sry for the spelling :) but they have side affects There is a drug called scooma which is like cannabis and it is illegal although alt of people sell it and there is a den and an addict. You can get arressted. Join a thives, fighters, mages and assasins guild. Join the arena or help a dadric prince/princees. Complete the main quest to save everyone as well as random people quests in both expanshions as well. And finally exploring u can find stories in ruins. The andventure never ends well enjoy!

Great game with a couple of problems

Oblivion is an exceptional game for many ages. There are few sexual references. Some characters and one book include suggestive dialogue, but it is not obvious. You also have the ability to move dead bodies and strip them down to their underwear, which might be a problem. Overall, the game is better suited for teens.

    Okay Game....Very Creepy

My brothers play this a lot, so I started playing it. It can be creepy and scary in some parts. It is violent. In some areas...ZOMBIES come...and they are really creepy! Once you get out of the tutorial, it is more fun and a better game. It's an okay game.

While violent, it's still a good game

While this rpg is very violent the plot is to save the world from these aliens that are trying to kill everybody. You start off trying to save the emperor but you fail and he tells you to find his heir and "shut close the jaws of oblivion". It depends on the choices your child makes in this game. If they kill somebody they can join a guild of assassins but if they become a good fighter they can become a sort of guard of the city and rescue people that are being attacked by ogres or such. If you play with them or watch them play and make sure they make good choices it should be fine

Pretty Much the Greatest game on Next Gen Consoles yet!

Just like Fallout 3, this is a magical type of game that you can play for many hours and never be bored. While it is quite Violent, but not TOO much gore, other than the environment of the Fighting Arena, It isn't bad enough to be an M rated game. It should have been its original Teen rating. The only thing I have to say about sexuality is one particular Book, which is EXTREMELY suggestive. Language can somethimes be innapropriate, but not enogh to complain about, and you have the option to drink. I have tried hard to try to find something bad about this game, but cannot. The combat, the spells, the massive area, and the amazing way to play as YOU and not what the game wants you to be, makes it a must buy. And at the amazing 20$ price, there is no reason to object. 5/5

If your kids are not at least 13 do not let them play this.

This is probably one of the best games you'll ever play, But you should realize that there is a few things you should know about. first off Violence is deffinetly the biggest issue Players Wil hit monsters, animals, and people with swords, hammers, axes ect. And most the time you will usally see blood on the floor our wall next to were they were standing. Also there may be times were you might see skeletol or even fleshy remains of dead creatures or people. you might also come across enemys such as zombies that have missing limbs or exposed flesh and bones, but it dosn't go any farther then that. Langueg is also an issue words such as d-mn or h-ll are used repedidevly and sometimes they use the word ba-rd. Sexul behaver is a small issue you'll here some bad stuff in books, But there is one misson were you have to stop a gang of thieves who robbe men by prettending to.... well you know, but when you meet the thieves they'll say some iffy stuff and if you are just a little fumilier with sexul inuendos then you'll know what there talking about.

Great game, but iffy for younger players

I was 12 when I played this the first time and, quite frankly, there were parts of it that scared me to death. The creepy caves still freak me out, though the main areas are a joy to explore. Be warned that the violent content includes blood (which can be disabled in-game on the PC version only) and decaying corpses (which cannot be disabled other than through modification of the game files), as well as total freedom, meaning you can murder whoever you like, sometimes for profit. The sexual content is mild, save a woman who owns an inn on the bay and "reserves her beds for seamen" (cough, cough); she can be seen entering the locked rooms of all her tenants at night. However, getting inside the room reveals that she's simply sleeping beside them rather than actually having sex with them, though the implications are clear. This inn may not even be entered by the player. Finally, to clear up the ESRB rating confusion, the game was originally rated T but increased to M after release. This was done not because someone made nude skins, but because someone made an unofficial patch that unlocked nude (read: topless female) skins that came with the game that were otherwise unaccessible. The ESRB also felt that the game was more violent than the developers showed in their presentation. Unofficial mods (PC-only) can also be pornographic in content, so be careful what your children download; don't ban mods outright, as some of them are perfectly fine, but look at what they have installed.

This game is really fun. Its about trying to close the gates of Oblivion (hell) to save the world of Tamriel. Not really bad. There is an assassins guild(the dark brotherhood) which u get paid to kill people. You can see blood on grass and walls plus you get to move bodies but overall i say if the kid is mature enough to play t games then he can play this. btw this game is only rated M cause a perverted guy made a shirtless female mod for the pc version.

A modern classic, A must buy for anyone over 12!

Disregard what you parents have heard about this game's violence and nudity, blood can be TURNED OFF if you so wish (but even with blood on their hardly is anything to see). Their are some scary, zombie like monsters (but heck you see those every Halloween, so why are you so worried about them now?). Nudity is not an issue (down to underwear), you would have to modify the game's textures and meshes just to make that possible. Their is a little language and suggestive themes, but it shouldn't be an issue for most kids over 11 or so. I've played this thoroughly for about 2 years, so I know what I'm talking about. You can take alcohol, but your character isn't saying "Oh kids you should try this stuff", all you do is click on it, and its gone, that's all that happens (you parents really overreact sometimes on this stuff). Now onto the good stuff, this is a must buy for anyone into RPG games and beautiful Medieval-style gameplay. Character's interact with one another and live out their lives according to their jobs. You also don't have to follow the main quest at all, you can choose to help people with the smallest of unique quests, or just roam the world and explore it's hidden secrets and features. Over two years, it still has never lost its fun!

    This review is inaccurate.

First of all, do any of you remember when Oblivion first released? Remember what letter it had on it. That's right, a "T", not an "M". The only reason they changed it to an "M" rating was because of a user-created mod that allowed for topless women. User-created. As in, not enabled by the developers. Since the 360 and PS3 versions of the game do not allow players access to user-created mods, they should technically still be rated Teen. Likewise, the violence isn't that bad! Things bleed a little, but it's not like arms are viscerally sliced off or goblins are brutally decapitated. All they do is bleed. You have a little blood on the ground and on your sword, and the corpse is in perfect condition. No cuts, scrapes, bruises, or breaks. The only time things get a bit grisly is when you encounter zombies, who are mutilated a bit, but not terribly. The sexual content, though it does exist in-game, is only referenced. There is no actual sex in the game. At the most, people just sleep in the same bed. Fully clothed! They're not even under the blanket! Besides, the references are nothing teenagers haven't already been exposed to at this point in their life. Pretty much all of them have already had The Talk. The majority of the drugs is one called "Skooma". It is barely mentioned in the game, and there are maybe two quests that directly have to with it. In closing, Oblivion is a fantastic RPG for teenagers of all kinds. The review found here gives no almost no info regarding these topics, simply saying, "there is sexual content" or something wooden like that. Thank you for your time.

    Amazing Game

This is definitely one of my favorite games of all-time. The open world, sandbox gameplay makes endless possibilities, and the excellent game engine provides amazing physics and gameplay. The graphics are wonderful, and the scenery will blow you away. But with all of that freedom comes responsibilities. Although you are encouraged to do the right thing, you always have the choice to choose the path of a thief or murderer. After murdering someone in cold blood, you can become a member of the Dark Brotherhood, which hires you to assassinate people. You can also join the Thieves Guild, which will hire you to steal things, and buy stolen goods. You can also become a vampire, and at some point in the game you will be afflicted with the disease and make the choice to find the cure, or remain a vampire. In order to survive the daylight, being a vampire requires you to feed off of other people. Luckily feeding doesn't kill people, but it is creepy and evil nonetheless. In the right hands this can be a fantastic game, know your kid's maturity level before buying.

    Amazing

First off the game is quite stunning and almost unreal. I cant believe there are people out there who have not played this game yet and if you havent you should really look into it even if its only to see the amazing graphics. The scenery is some areas is much prettier in lack of a better word than Fallout 3 which is made by the same people and kind of similar in ways. Now with being "Mature" i dont think it is at all, the blood is very minimal from what i have seen a little splatter here and there, waah, its not like teen games dont have that, and your underwear i mean who cares, 9 years olds can handle this. So just play it already.

A very good game for the right audience

Yes there's a lot of realistic blood and you can choose to become a murdurer. They made it a lot like real life because you can choose how to live your life. You could be a goody goody two shoes, a normal citizen, a killer, a theif, or even a drunkard. There are some questionable outfits that you can put together.... and you can run around in your under where.... you can take peoples cloths off... so that's not a very good message to young game players.... I'd say 16+

    Incredible... but mature?

this game, although originally rated teen, contains very disturbing violence, including translucent zombies, gored bodies, lots of realistic blood effects, one mission involves killing innocent house goers, also you watch as pictures fall on a mans head and snap his neck and blood splatters, also you can kill anyone you want, although with consequences, and you can shoplift, steal, break into houses, resist arrest, and even get away with murdering someone in their sleep. also there is barely any sexual content, including some suggestive outfits and some sexual banter. there is some language including b*****d and b***h and d**n and hell and thats about all. you can also get drunk by drinking ale, beer, wine, and other liquors. overall id say this is for any mature mid-teenager.

You'll see the movies, games, books, shows, music, and sites our editors select just for them. As your children get older, our picks will grow with them!
Why we ask for this
We never display your children's names, (or nicknames) to anyone, but you. Providing your children's ages allows us to personalize information on our site, so you get better information, faster.
