Common Sense Note

This book/software for the Little Touch LeapPad is a great aid in introducing babies to language--both English and Spanish. Please note that our age recommendation does not match the audience for this product. That is because Common Sense Media does not usually recommend media products for kids under two. This product, however, operates more like a board book or educational toy and thus earns our five star recommendation. Unfortunately, our technology wasn't designed with a capacity to display ages under two in our lifesaver--that is why the age in the middle of the lifesaver here is 2+.

Let's Get Busy, Baby! is an additional book/software set for the Little Touch LeapPad Learning System.

The twenty-page book is loaded with photos of babies doing a variety of typical baby things, including getting dressed, moving, eating, playing with toys, and saying goodnight. It also has pages that teach the parts of a baby's body and the features on a baby's face. One two-page spread introduces toy instruments, and another introduces feelings by showing six photos of babies expressing different emotions.

By snapping the Let's Get Busy, Baby! book and software cartridge into the Little Touch LeapPad, the pages of the book become interactive, because they are on top of a touch sensitive platform. The parent can activate hotspots on the pages of the book by pressing down with a finger. The book can be explored using three different settings. With Setting 1 (for 6-12- month olds), the hotspots produce sounds and musical rhythms. With Setting 2 (for 12-24-month olds), the hotspots introduce words along with music and sounds. Setting 3 is for older toddlers (2-3-year olds) because it introduces rhymes and more complex preschool concepts. In addition to these three settings, parents can activate a bilingual option and have the words on the page pronounced in Spanish.

Each pair of pages features an extra activity called a "bright spot" that is activated by pushing on the yellow light bulb symbol. The bright spot may be an interactive song, or a seek-and-find game. The bright spot on the musical instruments' pages starts a song; and then, every time a parent touches a new instrument, that instrument joins in.

In addition to the book, this set includes an activity card that reinforces the concepts introduced in the book, as well as adding games about farm animals.

This book/software set is an excellent way to introduce language to a baby. Babies love to look at pictures of other babies. The book introduces over 50 words to a youngster, and it does it in an environment full of music and sounds. The book also offers helpful advice to parents about how to engage a child using this book/software set.
